May Never Get Another Flu Shot

DH got his flu shot a couple of weeks ago and had minor symptoms. Tired and achy and no appetite. He was that way for about 3 days.

I had mine day before yesterday and I was up from 10 pm till 7 am with some of the worst diarrhea I've ever had in my life. It was so bad I contemplated making a bed in the bath tub. It's like it didn't have a turn-off on the faucet. It's called the senior dose. I'm exhausted. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem with the flu shot? Neither DH or I have ever had this happen before.

I never had any side effects from mine, DH neither.

And he has Crohns disease, so he gets diarrheah easily.

I would report that to the place that gave you the shot that is awful! My husband had the senior version and had no symptoms. I have never heard of that symptom but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen, especially if you eat the same food as your husband and he had no stomach issues. Hope your feeling better.

I have not. But I don't get the senior version because of other rough side effects. Same with my sister.

Even though I'm a senior, I just get the "regular" dose flu vaccine and don't have any problems. Nor have I gotten the flu since getting the shots.

Sorry you've had to deal with that. This is just more proof that everyone is different and these 'one-size-fits-all' shots don't account for that fact.

You can choose to get the regular shot rather than the senior one. Just make sure they know your wishes and don't let them try to talk you into something that you don't want.

As for me, the last flu shot that I got was sometime in the mid 1990s. I have gotten bad colds but not the flu in decades.

I have never gotten a flu shot and frankly, I don't plan on ever getting one. I would rather take my chances on my own. Hope you feel better soon.

My dear sister and I had flu shots for over 30 years and never experienced diarrhea from them. I've had the senior flu shot for years.

What you described is similar to a stomach virus or food poisoning, First, you should see a doctor to eliminate those possibilities, food poisoning can be deadly.

@jubilant, was this the first time you've gotten the senior version of the flu shot? I got the senior one last year and the year before and on the first one I was concerned. But I had no problems. My last two Covid vaccines have been a different story. First two shots....nothing. Last two shots....BAM!

I do have an approximately 3 inch by 3 inch sore red swollen mark on my arm. Never had that before either.

Yes, to my knowledge, this is the first time for senior shot.

Sooo sorry that happened to you @jubilant . Mr. Shoes and I had our senior flu shots about a month ago with no side effects at all. Such differences in how we all react.

Yes, that's true. I'm wondering if it's because I've been in ill health lately??? I told them about my strokes so I'm wondering if my immune system has been affected by the strokes?

I am so sorry this happened to you @jubilant . I only take the regular shot as the senior shot made me sick a couple of years in a row.

I think with our weakened immune systems from heart disease, it's probably why everything hits us so hard. Still praying for you and think of you often.💕💐

I have taken the senior flu shot for years. No reaction except some soreness at the injection site. Shingrix and COVID did cause me significant reactions, but no diarrhea.

I am intrigued by the suggestion you may have had food poisoning. The diarrhea is an indicator. Perhaps your doctor or pharmacist can determine what happened. I hope you recover quickly.

Hi @Trinity11 I think of you often, too and you are on my prayer list.

I see a new heart doctor tomorrow. My hematologists made a suggestion to add Warfarin to the Brilinta. My blood is so thin now that I don't think I'm going to do it. She did say there is no right or wrong decision. I am pretty bruised all over the way it is and my family doctor raised his eyebrows when he heard this...I got the feeling, though he didn't say so...that he wasn't on board with it.

Tomorrow, I will discuss it with my new heart doctor.

Next time, I'm taking the regular shot, too!

If the flu shot was the culpret, everyone else who received a flu shot the same day (or from the same batch of vaccines) would have also had the same reaction . . . and probably contacted the Pharmacist who provided the shot. If he/she has not had others with the same complaint, it would appear you have had food poisoning and need to rethink all foods consumed during the 48-60 hours prior to the flu shot.

What did you eat? Where did you eat? Was anything fixed at home from leftovers? What did you eat than your husband did not? You'll narrow it down and figure out what was eaten to cause your problem.

Next year, be careful with foods and drink a lot of water prior to any of your shots! Dehydration can cause all kinds of problems, too. Please don't give up of your vaccines, which protect you and others throughout the winter months.

Consider it a tough "learning lesson" in life, but don't dwell on it. You are protected and, fortunately, feeling much better! (Remember to go over the foods you ate prior to having the shot for clarity of food poisoning.)

I've had every vaccine that's come down the pike in the past 25 years, including flu shots every year, and nothing has much affected me except a slightly sore arm.

Yesterday I had a flu shot in one arm and Covid in the other. I was up all night with slight fever, achiness, and two throbbing arms. I finally took one of my forbidden NSAID pills about 4am and went to sleep for awhile. I'm okay today except for sore arms.

I was also supposed to get the RSV vaccine but apparently Medicare isn't approving it, thank goodness.

Yes, I'll continue to get flu shots. My one-night-stand was a small price to pay considering how severe the flu can be.
