On 6/8/2014 motherinlaw said:
Sometimes you just get a bad tech. Last year, after many years of mammos, I got a bad tech. Knew it from the moment I saw her.

Long story....she did more pics initially. I was called the next day to come back for more. Two weeks later and the same tech....not a good idea but not my fault.....the new pics were fine. She said "everything went away." She was a weird woman. It is now on my record NOT to ever have this tech again.

This year, back for my normal annual mammo. Told the tech this year what happened last year and told her "just do your job." She did and everything is fine as usual.

Moral of the story here....if you are not comfortable with the tech you have that day and your radar goes up....walk out and reschedule. It was a wrinkle per se but no one would even give me that little bit of assurance while I waited for the next exam two weeks later. No one even took responsibility for a possible error on their part....silence is what I got. So I am now seriously considering switching doctors at least. She seemed impartial to what I told her about this incident and just kept saying my breasts are dense and there is calcification as well but that is a normal part of aging and nursing babies.

Everyone is so busy trying to keep their butts covered that the simpliest answers are not even discussed but cloaked in mystery. Such a shame what patients are now put thru. Can't make $$$ for the medical machine if you don't have people coming back for additional tests.

Just my rant but it needs to be said. Much of this today is to keep lawsuits at bay. Yes, we all want the best tests done is the most accurate way but when does common sense come in or more importantly....when did it go out? Thanks for listening and I hope this has helped someone else out there if they have had a similar experience.

I have been having mammograms from a couple of decades now. In Seattle, I would have them done and wait till the X ray DOCTOR OK'd them. If there were any questions about the films, you would know then and there and do them again. I even was asked for a sonogram once. You wait in a room would a few other women waiting for the same thing and meet some really fantastic women.

In New York, I was made to come back in and asked to bring in previous films. This was inconvenient, and just plain sloppy medicine. And they can request digital images more easily themselves! I also ask for digital mammos because of the cystic breasts I have.

Well, I learned that if your doctor writes a prescription for the mammo, then a radiologist will look them over when they are taken. I let the radiology center know, in no uncertain terms what I want. I have experienced professionalism in this field and want no less.

BTW my friend is a medical transcriptionist who works with radiologists who do nothing but look at mammograms from all over the US. Some of them are bipolar (admitted by them) or in other altered states when reading these films. Sorry, not for me.....

I am scheduled for a breast biopsy because of microcalcifications that showed up on my mammogram. Has anyone else had this problem? Mine are clumped together in a circle. Would like to hear from anyone who has gone through this. Thank-you

I have that, and these new digital mammograms catch these tiny, tiny spots. The radiologist says that look for patterns and that these couldn't be felt by an exam. I had a core biopsy and it was just calcification. Ever since then, the calc. shows up, and so I have the readings every 6 months for change. I've been doing these for a while now, and they are always ok, thank the Lord.

yes. I had a biopsy and am over due for my 6 month follow up. I have to call next week. It''s a bit painful, definitely uncomfortable. The worst part is waiting for results.

My neighbor just experienced this. This she had the biopsies and had additional tests done after the mammogram.

She is fine, but was told to have two mammograms each year.

She had a two week wait for results after the biopsies were done.

I wish you good luck.

I had this and also had the biopsy. There was nothing found. I had to have another mammogram after 6 months - that was good and they said I could go back to mammogram and sonogram once a year.

I was told that I had a grouping of 6 calcifications and they do a biopsy when there are more than 5.

Yes, I had a biopsy 2X because of calcifacation. THe first time was almost 20 years ago when they did a biopsy for everything. It was larger too. It was removed, and it was nothing.

Second time was a larger one in the other breast. Nothing.

I did have cancer the 3rd time. However, they KNEW by the look of the calcification that it was cancer. They said they were 99% sure, and they were right. It had irregular edges, and was odd shape. It was not tumor type, just a calcium deposit that went haywire. I had surgery, a partial mastectomy and radiation. That was 10 years ago.

Just to let you know, cancer usually has a distinct look to the calcification. There are shadows, irregular shape, and there is something about the edges. They do biopsies to err on the side of caution, because... you never know. They have regulations for biopsies. One is the calcifacation is suspicious, or it is a certain size (even if it looks fine), or there are more than a few. OR, if the patient insists or has a history of cancer.

It is best you have (had) the calcium deposit removed. I am sure you will be fine, but that doesn't stop the worrying. You would think in this day and age they would have a test, that could tell you then and there what it was. Anyone will tell you the waiting is the worst part. I am sorry you have to go through this. Let us know how it goes.

Good Luck

My partner had the same calcification issue. Mammography / MRI every 6 months for a while. After 2 years of this she insisted on a lumpectomy and it turned out to be Breast Cancer. She is doing fine. The most peculiar thing that stuck with me is something an oncologist told us :"" The calcifications are a shadow of something else going on.""

Hope all of you are diligent with the follow-ups and fortunate in never being diagnosed with anything worrisome.

I had the same experience as Shoekitty. In my case Biopsy of the calcification came back as ducal carcinoma in situ which is early cancer still confined to the milk duct. I had 2 surgeries and radiation. That was 10 years ago. So glad that my surgeon insisted on doing the biopsy instead of waiting and doing mams every 6 months. OP, hope all is well for you!

I've had that (they didn't do anything). I've had to have a solid mass removed (not cancer). There have been several times when I've had something show up on the mamogram and then the Dr said, "cut way back on anything that has caffein in it.

I did and it went away.

Yes, way back over 32 years ago, they found massive calcifications. I had biopsies in both breasts & they were benign. They now say this is unnecessary surgery. So if I were you, I would not let this be any concern. Calcifications seem to be very common, but benign.

I have gone through 2 surgical biopsies. I am on the 6 month deal as well. Results have been benign. The only "downer" was that the second biopsy was near the nipple and the scar was about a inch long. When it healed....it healed weird and now I have a dimple at the scar every time I breath. Trust me, I know this is not a problem compared to dealing with cancer. The only thing I will do different is go to a watch status. Before, I wanted everything "out" because it scared me and there is a family hx. of breast cancer in my family. Now I will respond only if the calcs change form, grow etc. I wish you well with your healthcare.

I have had galactorrhea (constant milk production due to hormone imbalance) for many years. I, therefore, have cystic breasts and now calcifications.
Mine were diagnosed years ago. They never showed that pattern that is more serious. Nevertheless, I have my digital mammograms every year. My daughter has now been diagnosed with them. She is also vigilant. I don't worry about them as much as I did when I was first diagnosed since it's been such a long time, but I know how important it is for me to be checked.

Yes, I have had this experience and kind of a double whammy. In Dec. I had a routine mammogram and almost simultaneously noticed a growing nodule in my groin. This was getting bigger and bigger and was sent to a surgeon for a biopsy. This turned out to be lymphoma and began seeing an oncologist. This is at a stage where it is very treatable and he routinely checks my blood and so far, I am at a point where it is watch and wait, so no chemo as of yet and keep my fingers crossed this was be the status quo. However on my routine Mammo there were some calcifications that needed a work up and I kind of delayed it while dealing with the lymphoma. I did have a biopsy and as another poster commented, I have DCIS which is the best form of breast cancer one can hope for. The biopsy itself was not bad and my results came back very fast. I opted to see the same surgeon who did the inguinal biopsy and now more decisions needed to be made. Option 1 was a lumpectomy which would have to be followed by radiation therapy and Option 2 was a simple mastectomy with no radiation needed. I had decided I did not want to go thru radiation therapy as it takes a big toll on the body, so I am now scheduled for a mastectomy on June 24th. I was offered reconstruction and also declined that. I am going thru this pretty much alone and just trying to be an informed patient. So I read a lot and want to get back to a more "normal" life. The bottom line is without the biopsy, there is no way of knowing whether or not the calcifications are malignant. Also, there are financial considerations as treatments can be extremely costly and I do not have deep pockets.

So my best advice is to get the biopsy and deal with whatever the outcome is in the most proactive way you can.

Good luck to you.

Yes, I have had 6 Biopsies on the same general area and 1 Lumpectomy since 2005. All were benign. In my case, they have concluded that all the Biopsies caused scarring that then shows up as suspicious on Mammogram. Last year I did not have to have even an ultrasound. I am due now for my Mammogram so we will see. Don't get nervous there are many false positives. They told me most are benign.
