Possible Encephalitis

Some one close to me ,has been very sick in the hospital for over 10 days, many MRI test, spinal tabs,eegs they tested them yesterday for this, they said it will take 2 ,or 3 wks,to get results, this seems to be a very long time.

Encephalitis is swelling of the brain. They must be looking for the cause of the swelling. I hope your friend gets relief soon and a full diagnosis so treatment can begin to eliminate the cause.

@''From what I remember, having worked in the hospital lab...meningitis is difficult to treat because it takes a long time to culture specimens and wait for them to grow then identify what will work to kill the invading organism.

It could be viral or bacterial as causative. It just takes a longer time, as I mentioned to culture it and identify the med that it will respond to.

I think it also depends on the hospital as to the time frame. A large hospital, such as a university hospital or a large city hospital, will have access to a faster turnaround result/s.

Encephalitis, is what they are testing for.

They are trying to move them to a boston hospital,but slow going.I thought perhaps some had been through this, is why i asked.

@goldensrbest Yes, I'm sure if it's a hospital in Boston it's definitely better equipt to handle this particular testing and follow-through. Best wishes and a speedy recovery for your friend. Many years ago, my daughter was tested for meningitis and a spinal tap was done at a large well known hospital in NYC. (Columbia Presbyterian/Cornell Weill Hospital) The testing was done immediately and the results were back within a few hours of the testing.

@goldensrbest. Do you have cases of West Nile Virus in Maine? I couldn't find any specific data. Encephalitis is one of the forms it can take in elderly people. My mother died of it in 2003. Her test results were processed in a couple of days by the state health department.

My experience

preliminary bacterial cultures should be back very quickly and all final bacterial results back within 48hrs . the other tests for viral studies are the ones that take longer as they are send outs to other labatories

My results for meningitis and encephalitis came back very quickly. They did blood work and a spinal tap in the ER and then admitted me. Next morning when I woke up (I'd been unconscious the day before) they told me what I had. And then they did an MRI of my brain.

Sounds like they are sending the lab out to a specialized labs. That often takes weeks to get the results back. There are cutting edge, specialized labs that local hospitals aren't equipped to do.

Sometimes it’s difficult to figure out the specific viral agent that caused the encephalitis. The preliminary screens can be done in-house and come back pretty quickly, but some of the more specialized tests can take several weeks and are sent to an outside lab.

Glad to hear they are going to Mass General.
