I've never tried to fast other than a day of fasting for all members of my church. Being a Type 2 diabetic for over 20 yrs I started making big changes a couple of yrs ago due to multiple knee surgeries so my diet includes lots of veggies, fish, turkey, fruit (apples) no fried foods. With my highest weigh being 254 over time I am now down to 128 and gone from a 1x to a small or xsm. I no longer take diabetes meds or blood pressure meds. IMO I think diet and exercise is the best way to lose weight. You and your doctor should discuss what works best for you. Best wishes !

I was talking to my Dr. about trying to lose ten pounds and how I can't take the pounds off. He suggested intermittent fasting so I have been trying it. I am twelve days in and I have not lost a pound. He said it could take anywhere up to a month to see any results until your body gets use to it.
Has anyone tried this and have you had any luck. According to my Dr. it works and is really good for your overall health.

I do more OMAD than the Intermittent Fasting. I just wait until the end of the day (about 8:00 p.m.) to eat one meal a day. I drink black coffee or water all day since they say even adding a sugar substitute can make your body think it is eating and ends your fast. I started doing one meal a day decades ago but I have heard that it takes 30 days to see results for IF.

I exercise every single day so that also keeps me at the weight I have been since a teenager. Except of course during pregnancy and for the four months after birth. Good luck and keep it up. Some days are harder than others but for me it is just regular part of my life.

I saw a segment on GMA that gave the results of a study that compared intermittent fasting to reducing overall calorie intake. Those that simply reduced their calorie intake lost more weight. GMA reported that it appears that those that loose weight by intermittent fasting are doing so b/c they are taking in less calories by limiting the amount of time that they are eating not necessarily by the fact they are fasting.

Google The New York Times article debunking intermittent fasting. I do it often but it definitely does not make me lose weight. Quite the contrary, in fact. My body just adapts further destroying my metabolism. Too much dieting over the years has me gaining weight at 1200 calories.😳

I think one component is keeping your blood sugar steady so there's more to it than just when you eat. Another component may be emotional so a person may need to deal with subconscious beliefs (ie extra weight makes me feel safe). Below is what I posted to someone else just last week when they brought up weight issues:

I have a friend that's released* weight recently and said it's been so easy.

- eat only within a 6 hour window (ie 12-6)

- eat protein one day, carbs** the next and a combo meal every couple weeks

- activate the brown fat cells which burn fat (easy 15 min video on youtube - search Just Swing Arms to Activate Fat Eating Cells to Lose Weight 70 Times Faster)

- take berberine (1000mg in the am)

- take garcenia for healthy metabolism 2-3 times a day (1000 mg)

* losing means you want to find it again

** low glycemic versions (ie brown not white rice/bread/pasta, berries not watermelon...)

I've also read that IF is not for long term weight loss. Be careful trying this! Doubt it's as safe or as successful as the current trend expects it to be. It has to play havoc with blood sugars and other areas of the system. The body is like a finely tuned machine and needs to be kept running in perfect condition; not playing with its timing and fuel.

ETA: One of the hosts touted IF several months ago until QVC put a stop to her comments about it. She still mentions "not being able to comment about certain things on air" during her Livestreams. Apparently there was a big disagreement over IF and some of her other opinions on health.

I don't IF, but there is usually a long period between my last meal of the day (~8 pm) and the first meal of the day (~10 am), so that's about 14 hours. But, that's just my way of life. I'm not doing it to lose weight. And, I'm like another person here that when I get hungry, I need to eat something. I just don't get hungry as often as that person does.

I did lose weight doing a moderate low carb diet. Not Keto, nothing near Keto. I just limited my gross carbs to 100/day. I didn't play the game of net carbs so I could subtract fiber to make the total carbs lower. Just total carbs. But, I can't make it a lifestyle. I like my carbs too much. I've kept it off, but I try to stay active and not eat until I'm stuffed. I'll often just have a snack for supper. I like my largest meal to be lunch

I am up to 130 pounds now from the meds. I was told to stop dieting or my neck won't heal. It's just I can barely walk now and I get no exercise. I believe the Type 1 diabetes is the cause. I already have had two eye strokes and two heart attacks and that's with perfect A1C's. And for years I thought being thin would keep me alive. I have a lot of obese friends who are very healthy. But you have to be consistent when you start your 8 hours and stop.

Also you still have to eat healthy and not fill up all the 8 hours eating.

Exercise is important too.

Your program may not be right for you so ask your doctor if one of the other methods would be better for you.

Good luck.

Wouldn't ever consider eating within a small window of time , like 11am to 3pm. I typically stop eating at 6pm and eat again at 8am which is a fourteen hour span. To me, that's just normal life and not fasting.

I have done IF before it even had a name. I discovered at college that I liked a big breakfast and then a large meal around 1 or 2. Just me. I also raised a grazer who makes me crazy with her munching. Even after kids came, we both still weight what we did in college.

I don't think IF will cause weight loss. Face it, if you shove down 5,000 calories in two hours you will have issues.

Look more to your food choices and exercise program for loss. Good luck!

I do itermittent fasting and love how easy it is!

You choose what hours you want to do it and eat anything you want during the eating time.

I think it helps more with maintaining a weight than losing it.
