@Barb999 wrote:

If I may congratulate every person who got thre Shingles shot ! Let me tell you how my life changed when I got SHINGLES in 2005.

 It was the day after we went to a party, I had a cute new outfit for the party, the next day I felt like I needed a nap, so I took one.

When I woke up there was a sore spot on the back of my left leg/butt area. I asked my husband to look to see if I had a boil or something there, it really hurt. He saw nothing. An hour later, I asked again because I couldn't sit easily. There was a tiny red spot.

Later on I still felt yucky, and sore, he checked and there were several spots.

Advise Nurse gave me quick appointment, my doctor recognized the beginning of Shingles, which I never heard of. He gave me an Anti Viral shot, and wrote perscription for Percoset, one every 6 hours at first.

By the next evening I was in a lot of pain, and there was a mass of red spots.

It ended up covering my left thigh in the back, left buttocks, around the front onto my abdomen. Doctor told my husband to take pictures since this was a massive outbreak. He did, I still have them.

By the weeks end I was in such pain I couldn't stand to have clothing touch me. I had trouble sleeping.

Doctor increased my pain meds to Percoset- 2 every 4 hours, eventually added Morphine- long staying .

 Bizzare things happened, I couldn't stand bright colors, my husband had to repaint a wall for me. I heard everything and it hurt my head,like my son opening a bag of potato chips, I couldn't stand the sound.

Months went by and eventually I was able to get dressed, but had to give away my hot tub, couldn't stand the hot water.

Years went by, honestly, years. I gave up the Percoset after 3rd year, but I was on the long lasting Morphine for a long long time. I gave it up myself 18 months ago.

Mostly now the area doesn't bother me, but still a couple times a month I describe it as it screams at me.

When the doctor asked me to describe the pain whern it was at it's worse, I said this, " It's llike I have millions of angy bees inside and they each have razer blades attached to their claws and they are trying to slice out of me" .

 There was no Shingles shot when I got it, but my doctor told me to take it last year so it doesn't come back, and I did!

I am thankful for my doctor and modern medicine.

Thank you for your time in reading this.

@Barb999

WOW, what an awful experience! Thank you for taking the time to explain how painful this can be. I bet if anyone was on the fence about getting the shots, they decided to go forward. I think you saved at least one person a LOT of pain.

I had my two shots last year (Shingrix) and I did react. It felt like I was getting the flu with muscle aches and a slight fever. Ibuprofen worked for me and I was prepared with it for the second round. It lasted a day both times. Good Luck!

My DH was part of the large trial for Shingrix before it was FDA cleared, and he had only a minor reaction to it, so I got mine as soon as my insurance covered it, in the summer of 2019 and then the second in the fall. Neither of us had any serious reactions to it, just a slightly sore arm, and DH had bloodwork testing his immunity (titres) and that showed the immunity Shigrix provided was very persistent, so we are both really glad we got the shots. My grandmother suffered with shingles in her later life and it was pretty awful, she used epsom salts baths to soak the rash and that helped ease the pain somewhat, but as soon as she would get out of the tub and dry off, the pain would start up again, because it's in the nerves. We didn't have gabapentin back then, so maybe there are better treatments, but I didn't want to find out, I just got the vaccine.
