blood pressure.....

My husband saw a new cardiologist this week and the doctor wants him to track his blood pressure. I do not know why because he does not have high blood pressure and he did not bother to ask why he needs to track the numbers.

Husband has AFIB, which is under control.

We need to purchase a blood pressure cuff, are any brands better than others? I don't have a lot of faith in them - I am fairly certain they are not all that accurate, but my husband will do as the doctor suggested.

Any recommendations? Thanks.

@Mom2Dogs I own a OMRON bp cuff. We purchased this at a

WALMART but the batteries go down fairly quick. I have carried it to the doctors office and found it to be pretty accurate though.

Omron arm monitor, is the best I've used. It can run on batteries or be plugged in.
I've taken it to several doctors appointments, and it's very accurate.

I prefer wrist monitor, cuffs make me nervous!! I have had a Reli On one for 13 years, this is a Walmart brand made by Omron, very reliable.

Omron is the one my PCP recommended ...had it for sometime, but believe I got it from Amazon.....

Blood pressure monitors don't last forever and in fact they can start to lose accuracy in about 2 years. So it's a good idea to have your monitor checked by taking it with you to your next doctor's visit so it can be compared to the one they use there.

I have a SmartHeart Blood Pressure Cuff that I purchased from HSN a few years back. They are also sold on Amazon. I love it, and I believe it is accurate because my readings do not differ from the doctors offices. The reason that I love it so much is that the gauge is attached to the cuff so it is really easy to take on and off. There is no tubing to fumble with. I would buy the arm blood pressure cuff, not the wrist. I think the arm reading is more accurate. I am a RN and want to comment on the blood pressure. I am happy your husbands doctor wants him to measure his blood pressure. High blood pressure is a silent killer causing the heart and other organs to fail if it goes on for to long.

When I graduated from nursing school, way back when, 140/90 and up was considered a high reading. Now, we want the blood pressures much lower less than 120/80.

Whichever you choose take it to the doctor's office to make sure it is accurate. Why not ask the doctor which to purchase?

When my husband needed to track his BP and keep a log I got one on Amazon. Had no idea which would be a good one and looked at a ton of reviews. Ended up with one that has been really great and still working great after a year ( yes once a year need to be sure they are still accurate at the Dr office)

I've had high blood pressure since I was 19 and have always used what my doctors' recommended: an Omron upper arm unit.

I've tried several and find them to be very inaccurate. Even the one at the dentist's office is poor. The arm kind are only slightly better than the wrist, but you have to have the right size cuff. If your husband is a big guy you'll need the extra long cuff. You take it three times and see what the average is, and make sure both feet are on the floor - no crossed arms or legs. I really only believe the results from the doctors office technician.

@Mom2Dogs it's possble that your husband's doctor isn't as concerned about the actual numbers as he is about watching a trend. That's speculation on my part. 🤷‍♀️

@JeanLouiseFinch @Mom2Dogs The thought that the doctor is monitoring blood pressure as a trend occurred to me, too. If the pressure level varies considerably either high or low, it could indicate a change in condition stability.

Never heard of a dentist taking blolod pressure!!! so very glad mine does not , neither did my perio doc for my implant. I would refuse it, just would make me nervous.

@Shelbelle My dentist takes my blood pressure every visit. It is before any treatment even a cleaning. The root canal specialist and the oral surgeon took my pressure at my evaluation visits. It is a routine practice in my area.

Must not be a practice herei n MD, I have been to regular denstists, perios, endodentists and my DH to a different gum specialist, never been done even before my 2 hour implant surgery. I would refuse it anyway, I only take mine at home or by my PCP.

@Shelbelle they don't do it every single time, but will for bigger stuff, never for cleanings. A few years ago, I was going to have some work done and they took it. Their wrist monitor was wacky and since the reading was bad the dentist refused to work on me that day. I had just seen my NP the day prior and my reading in her office was perfect.

My friend sees a peridontist, they always take her blood pressure. My dentist has never taken my blood pressure.
