Dry Eyes

At my annual eye exam in December my vision changed dramatically and my eye doctor said it was due to the fact I had very dry eyes. I had no idea. She said when they are as dry as mine were I was likely not to notice. So she sent me home with sample eye drops to use for three months. I had a follow up yesterday and with dedicated use of the drops and increasing my water intake I have shown much improvement. I can also tell now when my eyes are dry which she said was a good sign. She took photos of my tear ducts and although it looks like I am producing enough tears, she wants me to take Omega 3 fish oil daily which will increase tear duct production along with the drops for another 4 months. The fish oil she recommended came from a specific supplier and is 100% absorbed. If the fish oil does it job I should be able to stop the drops when I go for my follow up in July.

@ninjawife Not to scare you but PLEASE Google recent new articles about eye drops which have caused issues including some deaths and loss of vision. It was across more than one brand. A friend has been sending me articles. You'd think everything has been taken off the market, but I don't know...I've really only read the headlines, not all the followup.

I don't use drops regularly but have kept them on hand for my contact use when my eyes get dry occasionally...I threw all mine out until I hear more on this...even though mine weren't on the list so far...

So just a heads up, not to freak you out...just look up the articles and any questions maybe ask your doc? Again...I don't know all the details or updates on this, what's been done. Just wanted you to be aware.

@ninjawife --sounds exactly like my eyes and what my dr suggested. All that does help. Dr also said to put warm, moist cloths on the eyes a couple times a day/night --that will help to unplug your tear ducts that contributes to dry eyes--that was not a hard thing to do, as it felt so good. There is a procedure that opens up the ducts with a tiny tube. And another one that cost $100 an eye that I forget what it's purpose is, but my insurance didn't pay for it--I didn't get it. I go next month for my exam---my eyes are horrible--am looking forward to new glasses too

Can you share the specific fish oil supplier?

I've been taking Andrew Lessman fish oil for about a year and my cholesterol readings have improved as well as my eyes. I also use Systine eyedrops twice a day. Under control...

@amyb The eye drop brands that were recalled were off brands only sold online. Those would not have been the eye drops her doctor recommended.

@ninjawife It sounds like your eye doctor is helping you a lot. I have dealt with dry eyes for over 20 years and also use eye drops and fish oil. What brands of those two things did your doctor recommend?

I also have dry eyes and high eye pressures which I take drops for both. I find Refresh good for my dry eyes, they are single ampules I use daily. Funny you should mention fish oil, I've just started taking Andrew Lessman omega so hope mine improve. I also had cataract surgery in December which has been a little uncomfortable but using my drops has helped. Good luck.

I was told by my doctor to try the Bruder Eye Compress Moist Heat. I think it helps a lot. Very soothing.

Try taking Sea Buckthorn Oil softgels and or Astaxanthin softgels.

@NickNack @deb5555 The fish oil is De 3 Omega Benefits from PRN. They have to be specifically recommended by a doctor and ordered through a toll free number. I use Systane Hydrate eye drops 1 drop 2-3x/day.

I have a condition that causes dry eyes and eye drops no longer worked for me.
So now I have punctal plugs that don't open the tear ducts, but blocks them so that tears stay in my eyes longer. Medicare pays for mine 100%.

Thank you @ninjawife . I'll ask my optometrist about that brand of fish oil.

I take TheraTears which is a combination of fish oil and flaxseed oil.

My 86 yr old mom,just was told by her eye doctor ,she has dry eyes i would like to know name of the fish oil tablets ,please.
