What is NEXLETOL?

NEXLETOL is a prescription medicine used, along with diet and other lipid-lowering medicines, in the treatment of adults who need additional lowering of “bad” cholesterol (LDL-C) and have:

heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH), an inherited condition that causes high levels of LDL-C, and/or
known cardiovascular disease

It is not known if NEXLETOL can decrease problems related to high cholesterol, such as heart attacks or stroke

What should I tell my doctor before taking NEXLETOL?

Tell your doctor if you:

have, or have ever had, gout
have, or have ever had, tendon problems
are pregnant or breastfeeding, or may become pregnant or plan to breastfeed
have severe kidney or liver problems
are taking simvastatin or pravastatin

What is the most important safety information I should know about NEXLETOL?

NEXLETOL can cause side effects that can become serious, including:

high levels of uric acid in the blood, which can lead to gout, a painful joint condition. Call your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms:

severe foot pain, especially in the toe joint
warm joints
swelling
tender joints
joint redness

tendon problems: Stop taking NEXLETOL immediately and get medical help right away if you get any of the following signs or symptoms of tendon rupture:

hear or feel a snap or pop in a tendon area
bruising right after an injury in a tendon area
unable to move the affected area or put weight on the affected area

Seems a lot of the time drug side effects are worse than what you're dealing with to begin with. I'm on cholesterol meds (that is not a statin), but has the same darn bad side effects. I need to tell my doc about the pain I'm in when I visit at the end of the month. May not be the cause, but I've had this before when on statins.

What should be done for those having high chloresterol is testing for blockages that are present from chloresterol but they would rather push a drug than check! There are tests you can have but you must pay for them yourself as insurances do not regularly cover them which does not make sense!

@Pook YES! This could save many people from having a heart attacks that never would know they had a lot of coronary plack because doctors do not check for this and insurance rarely pays for any testing for it. It is not that expensive out of pocket and could be life saving.

In the case of a calcium score test, it would likely be covered by Medicare as long as your physician can prove it's medically necessary and it isn't classified as a screening exam... I was made aware of that when I went to the admission office the day I had the test....

Just one more drug I will not be taking--but I did notice the side effects include many tendon issues--wish those had been listed about Crestor back in 2006/7 when I took it and then had ALL those tendon problems and ended up have achilles tendon surgery on both legs---while taking Crestor--unneeded surgery because that SE was only reported by merely 45,000 people back then!!!

I had this test @SeaMaiden two months (with 0% plaque) before a major heart attack called the "widow maker." It is not sensitive enough to really "see" the arteries. Gold Standard is an angiogram but that's invasive.

I saw my cardiologist last Friday. He offered me this drug and I do Not have this specific genetic disorder @Mindy D. I do, though, have high LDL. I started eating some dairy again so it went up. I chose to eliminate it, so I can stop needing statins.

It was prescribed to me because I have "known cardiovascular disease". I guess then it isn't off label. Just saw that criteria. Thanks.

@SeaMaiden People are critical of statins for the same reasons and supposedly similar side-effects. However, I've been taking one for years and have never had even a hint of a side-effect. It did cause my cholesterol to drop like a rock and perhaps saved my life.

I only wish I had stayed off the internet and taken statins, like yourself @Kachina624 . I often wonder if I would not have had 2 heart attacks, stroke and subsequent heart failure.

My advice? Listen to your healthcare provider. I read too many websites denigrating statins and am living to regret it.

C'mon now @SeaMaiden

Do you really think anyone "wants" to take any type of medicine that is not a natural source? Think we all would love to cruise through life staying well, and doing so with the most natural sources available.

I am on several prescription meds, fortunately for some reason, symptom free. Do I like taking them, of course not. However, I prefer taking them to very likely---Esophageal Cancer/worse numbers connected to my Congestive Heart Failure/Diagnosed Clinical Depression/Panic Anxiety Disorder.

As with my 16 Colonoscpies/5 Double Balloon Enteroscopies(21 gallons of Go/NuLytely)/30-35 Endoscopies, and a seemingly endless list of other not real pleasant procedures.

My preference has always been to be able to live my style of life, and without all the above listed? I would be either dead, or living a life of possible misery every single day.

So, a few annoying side effects to me, is worth the possible trade offs.
