For me it's been an issue because I've had to learn to UNLEARN eating patterns that were thrust on me because first, yes, my mother's fear of me being too skinny as a kid and not getting enough nutrition. This was a real fear because as a first-generation immigrant born in poverty in another country, she never got enough to eat. So when she came to America she still had that fear and kept feeding me and feeding me. We were not allowed to leave food on our plates because they (my mom and her brothers and sisters) never had enough food to leave on a plate. We were given huge portions for kids. And she thought it was a sin to throw food away.

So, as a result, I was a chubby kid but then she saw how I had gained too much weight when one year on an elementary school clothes buying expedition I did not fit into anything and she had a fit. Made me feel like a ****** heel for being fat and causing her stress. So then she put me on a diet and I lost weight. And it's been a struggle and yo-yo dieting ever since.

Today it ended with me weighing in at a number that horrified me. Not that I haven't seen it coming. I've gained and lost the same twenty pounds so many times it's ridiculous. And not healthy!
This morning I joined WW. I definitely need structure and accountability.
I put a step tracker on my phone and will go for a walk this morning. Sunny and in the 70s today. What could be better!
Anyone else making positive changes to start the new year?
FWIW, my username on WW is fairydogmother2 if you happen to be a member and want to connect in the community there. 😊

Hello Fairydogmother! I too am with you. I joined WW Nov 25,2022 and weighed in this morning down 16 lbs. I am in my early 50's and just know that its now or never and I have to make a total shift in how I think of reducing, sticking to it and maintaining. I am going to get to my goal in 6 months and I will stick to the program for maintence. I have to say the advertising is very misleading in my opinon. I would advise to eat all your points. Use the Zero points as a base for meals and you will have success. I will find you on Connect. my name is Lisa

Good for you!!! I lost 10 pounds 2 years ago, which was my goal, by counting calories...and have kept it off! Here's the deal. A person can never go back to eating like they were, or they will look like they did!!! So it is a total shift in thinking, attitude, and actions. ETA: It is difficult to do when a person likes to eat and for me--cook. But I tell myself that nothing tastes as good as being thin feels. Dieting is hard, but being overweight is hard--choose your hard! You've got this!

Personally, I found it ended when I came to the realization that "diets" don't work, including Weight Watchers.

The only thing that ever worked for me is outright abstinence of certain foods. No chips, no cookies, candy, ice cream, cake, pizza, pasta and chocolate. Since March of 2020, I committed to a healthier lifestyle. It works for me and moderation simply does not. The ad for Weight Watchers about eating brownies and cookies? For myself, it would make me a lifer because it never worked for me.

In fact I found quitting cigarettes a lot easier back in 1980 than sugar @kaydee50 . Since no one can smoke one cigarette, I put those foods in the same category as harmful. Since as a Type 1 diabetic, I wanted to live as long as I could, abstinence is so much easier than wondering when I bought a box of cookies whether I could eat just 2. Now, I don't need to muster willpower rather the decision was already made back in 2020.

Not for everyone but I thought sharing may be a way of life where yo yo dieting could be over once and for all.

Like everyone else, my weight ebbed and flowed. Since the beginning of the pandemic I lost and kept off 30 lbs. And I am still trying to lose more. It is hard because it's an every day, every meal thing. Here are some of the things that I have been doing that work for me.

-If I don't want to eat it, don't buy it or bring it into the house

This sounds simple enough but it was a huge shift. If I don't have anything to snack on, I move on to doing something else.

- If I am not hungry at meal time, I don't eat!

- try to focus on food for health not for pleasure. I am eating less so what I do eat should be healthy. Healthy food will help stave off hunger longer. I don't snack between meals, but if I am hungry, I eat.

- meal plan a few days at time and shop frequently for fresh produce. No one likes old lettuce. Load up everything with more vegetables.

- holidays and special occassions can be pitfalls. I remind myself at every meal what I had recently and what I want to have coming up to make good choices.

- watch out for added sugar or sugary things with no nutrition. Candy & alcohol have zero nutritional value.

- I have found that what I eat is what I crave. Eating healthy makes me want to eat healthy.

-If eating something processed, get the healthiest available-- 100% whole wheat bread and burger buns, high fiber tortilla wraps, no sugar added peanut butter, unsweetened coconut or almond milk,

- it is normal for my weight to fluctuate a couple pounds on any given day or at different times of the day. I don't let that get me down or give up. I weigh myself in the morning and I notice this is normal for me. The scale is just a tool to see if I am on track in general-- as is the fit of my clothes.

Yo yo dieting stopped for me the day I joined WW 23 years ago. It was my last resort. I reached my goal in 2000 and kept it off all these years by staying on WW.

I know WW has a lot of haters, but it keeps me off that roller coaster.

Ppl post the weirdest concoctions, like you said anything for low points. The ingredients are mostly yuk. Trying to make something that tastes like the original version only modified to the point of, gross. I don't do that. I'd rather just not eat the donut 🍩 or whatever, than put together a science experiment that still won't be a donut. Ya know? 😁

I don't recommend this but my salvation was Diabetes and pure fear. I'm not kidding. After "the fight" all my life and birthing two large boys, my weight was a constant issue even being a member of TOPS. I sure didn't feel good. I came in with an A1c OF 12.... twelve!!

At my first Diabetes meeting at our local hospital, the group there literally gasped when I said 12 and I was the highest A1c there. I also said that I got it down to 6.3 in three months and have kept it down all these years. I've also lost over 70lbs and feel good for age 72. But being scared to death and motivated to lose weight and avoid simple carbs and avoid carbs/sweets in general, change my eating permanently and take this seriously has changed my life for the better. It's not something that you can quit, so a change in thinking is mandatory.

I absolutely love life and will continue to live as I've been doing. I'm no longer scared to death because I feel I have the map necessary to help me happily survive. It's been almost 20 years now.... and I feel very lucky to have found my road and very lucky to be alive.

The Yo Yo dieting ends when each of us takes the responsibility. Also having the support system.

For me it was last year when I had a physical after 3 years of avoiding it. The Dr told me I was diabetic with an A1C of 7.2 which was very high for my age. That was my wake up call. I also joined WW (they have a diabetic plan - YEAH) and have lost 20 lbs. I need to lose about another 20 lbs which does not want to leave but I am still working on it slowly. My A1C is now 3.5 so the program works.

My life has been one diet after another. My Mother would NOT allow me to eat so that I would be skinny. I was skinny but also sick. When does it end? When I have finally crossed the bar and met my pilot face to face.
