The study, published Monday in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health, found doing just under 10 minutes of moderate to vigorous exertion each day improved study participants’ working memory but had its biggest impact on executive processes such as planning and organization.

Vigorous physical activity is designed to boost your heart rate and breathing.

The cognitive improvement was modest, but as additional time was spent doing the more energetic workout the benefits grew, Mitchell said.

“Given we don’t monitor participants’ cognition over many years, this may be simply that those individuals who move more tend to have higher cognition on average,” he said. “However, yes, it could also imply that even minimal changes to our daily lives can have downstream consequences for our cognition.”

So get moving!!!

One of my exercise goals this year is to go up to a 40% incline on my treadmill. I just recently took it up to 20% from 4% and that's a workout!

My dh and I started a walking regime going on 3 years ago (5 miles every day in all kinds of weather). Not only did we both lose tons of weight but we've drastically reduced some meds and have eliminated some drugs altogether. And we feel much younger beyond our years! Yay! I'm a huge advocate for daily exercise!

Folks I am right there with you! I am working from home today so I did a 30 minute HITT bike ride on my Peleton. What a workout but dang I got a big boost! Later today I will do weight training.

I am a runner but I hate running in the cold so I have been biking a lot. At 67, my joints are starting to feel the impact of a lifetime of pavement pounding but I will continue as long as I can. Keeps me thin, strong, young and fresh (according to my daughter💕)

Rock on with it folks!

Don't need to say anymore other than this is just another study backing up what has been known for over 50 years. Fortunately, media and others are now making it available, to easily access by more of the population.

hckynut 🇺🇸

It's one of the first ones Nordic Track made with the 40% incline. Plus I bought it used from a friend so I got it for a really good price. It has a lot of miles on it and sometimes the incline won't go down...it kind of jerks and then sticks. Hate for it to stop working b/c I really don't want to buy a new one. Probably need to look around for another used one soon. This one seems to be on the brink maybe. I'm sort of hesitant to increase it anymore b/c then it won't go down! Appears to be a one-way ticket to uphill only.

This was done using either the Bruce or Balkie(y) Protocols. Their max incline was 25%.

Using either Protocol not 1 person in all their testing got beyond 14% for the 3 minutes between speed increase, along with 3% incline increase.

I never went past 10% if I wanted both Cardio and more Quad Endurance. Running at a higher incline had the opposite effects when it came to gaining more Cardio Endurance for longer races. The higher elevation did help strengthen the Quads, but had diminishing returns for longer distance running.

Still have that old Trotter and it still works fine.

DH and I walked three days a week at his cardio's recommendation but then DH had to have a cardio procedure that left him unable to do anything for six weeks...not even walk. Now it's bitter cold, but we try and go out when it is warm enough to stand it. I just hate when I can't go out and walk, it really makes you feel so much better. No matter what your age or condition, walking can be at any speed for any length of time, and it will still be good for you. Dr says as long as you are moving, it's beneficial.

The ones I mentioned were started around that point, and have continued to be done for all the years after.

While terminology might have changed, the findings are the same.
