Broken tooth

well,Friday I get 2nd tooth pulled.have had this done before but my anxieties are thru the roof.im paying extra to be put under.yes,I am a big sissy who is terrified of any kind of dentist tools.thurs is my last day working,so basically my weekend will be taking it easy.thank the lord you can't see missing teeth

Don't make excuses for being put under for this procedure. If that's what you need to get through it, so be it. Good luck!

@Luvsmyfam Let your dentist know that you are nervous. Try to be easy on yourself, a lot of people feel just like you do, but you are getting it taken care of, so good for you!

And it will be over before you know it and you'll be on your way!

My grandchildren's dentist gives them a Valium before. Maybe yours can too.

I have had 2 extractions including dental implant surgery, pieces of cake, just using novacaine, so dont worry!!

I also had to have a molar removed. I asked to be put under. I honestly did not want to hear drills or scraping bone as the dentist described it would sound. Don't feel bad for not wanting to be awake for that procedure.

I need Valium before nearly any dental procedure. You're not a sissy @Luvsmyfam for wanting to be put under. Definitely should not know anything when having a tooth extracted.

I typically pay extra for nitrous oxide even for root canal operation.

Had many invasive procedures and surgeries over the years, including lots of teeth extracted and root canals.

If given the option, my preference is to be awake. I am one of a minority that likes seeing what is being done to, and/or inside my body. Most recent being my Heart Catheterization.

Unfortunately, having that danged mask on, which I was forced to wear, blocked some of my vision on the monitors. Did however get to watch the whole video after. Neat!!

Actually, I have had many heart catherizations (8) always awake and two extractions. The extractions are a lot more annoying and uncomfortable. I think you made a good decision @Luvsmyfam . Good luck!

@Luvsmyfam I had a front tooth removed on Dec. 20th. Yes, I look like a hockey player. I'm in the process of getting an implant and currently in the waiting period for the bone graft to do its thing and harden. I have a flipper to fill the space. The tooth didn't come out in one piece so the dentist had to do some cutting and digging. The novocaine was actually enough for me. He sent me home with a few prescriptions - prednisone, hydrocodone, and a special mouth rinse. He also said I could take acetaminophen and ibuprofen as well the first couple of days. If your dentist gives you any prescriptions, use them according to directions. You may need some ice on your cheek. Just take it easy through the weekend and follow orders. Try to relax and be positive. You'll do much better that way. Good luck

@sweetee2 Valium is nothing like anesthesia.

You have had a lot of Heart Caths. At last count I can up with a total of 5. Kinda like a dentist on Novocaine, feel movements no pain. Sure like watching the scope moving through the area. The best was watching the balloon deploy during my 2nd heart attack, and seeing my Right Coronary Artery reappear on the monitor. Instant relief of chest pressure.

Now watching my back surgery and 2 of my many Colonoscopies wide awake, 1 without any anesthesia, were not quite as pleasant as the Heart Caths. Doc wanted me wife awake to make movements to try to make my Colon Bleed, which was the whole purpose of almost all my 16 Colonoscopies.

Hope you are doing ok. Things for me pretty much the same. Strong athlete 7 months ago, weak old man at the present. Still know it will get better, just keep working towards that time.

@Luvsmyfam , about 2 years ago, I lost #19 tooth because there was a deep crack in it. I needed to have it pulled and prepare for an implant.

I told the dentist that I can be a chicken, so he gave me a script for Ativan which worked very well. I also took some ear plugs and listened to some music on my phone.

You could give it a try in order to save some money.

@HisElk1 Thanks for advice,but I would absolutely freak out if I wasnt put out.The thought of them sticking a needle in my arm to put me to sleep,gives me anxieties

@Luvsmyfam , thanks. I know how you feel about needles. I have very bad veins and when I have to have blood taken, it's rough; same with an IV.

I did; however, come to learn that hospitals have a thing called a "vein finder" and they really work well.

Where do Phlebotomists, or nurses, put the syringe(needle) when you get blood drawn? Most of my hundreds were in my arm, more specifically, the crevice of my elbow.

Veins can sure make a big difference, not so much for blood draws, but an IV, what some refer to as a(PICC line), is a whole completely different animal. The person doing it and the quality of the tube used can make a huge difference.

When I was in the hospital for weeks at a time from 2002-2016, the IV was required to be changed every 72 hours. Seemed like they were always "doing another one". That has now been changed. From my more recent hospital stays, it seemed like it was up to the Charge Nurse, if it needed to be changed or not.

@Luvsmyfam The last time I was "put under" or given anything other than Lidocaine (they don't use "Novocaine" anymore and haven't for years google it), I was 12. It was when I had my wisdom teeth taken out. The Dr dropped one and I swallowed it. He had to wake me up and have my mother take me to the hospital for x-rays to make sure I didn't aspirate it into my lungs. After that I have never been put under again.

Too many stories of weird stuff happening when you are under in a dentist office. Nope, I'm good. Have had every root canal, filling, tooth extraction, implants etc with just the Lidocaine. No pain, never felt anything. Actually fell asleep once. But I understand being anxious about it. I know there many people terrified of the dentist. That's why there are special "sedation dentistry" places that specialize in keeping their patients sedated and comfortable throughout the procedures.

For me, I just can't stand the idea of being knocked out while they do their job. I also don't like the groggy feeling after. I want to know what they are doing period. If I'm paying them (and dental procedures are sky rocketing), I want to make sure of what they are messing with. I've had a dentist almost start on the wrong tooth. I had to correct him. I've had two extractions the dentist was so gentle about, I couldn't believe when she said she was done. I had to see the teeth! lol. Being afraid of the dentist is a pretty common fear.
