Xarelto-ouch, ouch, ouch

Refilled my Xarelto prescription today at CVS (my Medicare prescription plan's preferred pharmacy). 1st prescription of the new year, so it's time to meet my prescription deductible.

I take the lowest dose, 2.5 mg, twice a day (which is the standard monthly dose for that strength) so 60 pills, one month supply.

And the cost? $541. All out of pocket because my deductible is $500.

Good RX is of no help with Xarelto.

As I said, ouch.

I feel your pain. My husband is in the same situation.
He will be 75 next year and then hopes to qualify for the Watchman procedure which will eliminate the need for xarelto.

@Cwoldie - I take Xarelto because I had blood clots. They've been tapering me down and I'm hoping that I'll fully come off of it in late February, but I am not holding my breath on that.

My dentist recommended a root canal & crown for a back molar. Delta may pay some, but they aren't very generous on root canal procedures and I know I'll have to pay half of the crown's cost. Ouch for me too. Not good news for the start of 2023.

Hoping the cost of your Xarelto will be much less for the rest of the year.

I just laid out 7,000 for a dental implant, inurance poaid 1500, my bill in total was 8500. Hoping to get a tax break on it

Both me and my husband have crown replacements in the next month or so. I have dental insurance, but it's pretty much worthless since they won't pay for the crown my dentist will give me. They will pay for the cheapest crown available, and of course, it's not full price for even that.

@laluzdelmundo , I used to have Delta Dental through my company. They were really good back then. Glad I got my braces while still on them.

With no generic yet, patients will feel the sting. Plus, there's a big draw right now. Xarelto is much easier, for patients and their treatment team to manage, than older meds of its class. The demand is there.

What upsets me is that it probably costs less than a dime per tab (just guessing), for this med to be produced. Of course, they will just say the cost has to factor in necessary research. True, to a certain extent, but still...ouch.

I know how that is. I have COPD and the inhalers are very expensive, too. No generic for that either. Of course, you can get generic Viagra. Where's the justice?

Not sure if you know my history with blood clots, but been through it, started in 2002, with 1 of the most dangerous types. Most recent was because of a blood clot in my left arm, which my doctors believe, was caused by an IV placement during my Heart Catheterization procedure.

Prescribed Eliquis for 8 weeks. Fortunately my Hematologist discovered it and his offices Pharmacist gave me enough samples to cover those 8 weeks.

Since you said "they are tapering me down and hoping to come off it in late February", just curious as to the type/location, and possible cause, if it is known.

@hckynutjohn - I fell in the front yard. It had rained and I stepped from the driveway to the yard and the ground was wet and the dirt gave way a little and down I went. Blood clot was in my left leg and a tiny, almost microscopic one in my lungs. ER doctor couldn't see the one in my lungs. The radiologist had to point it out to him.

Thank you for your reply. My first round was also with PE. Back in 2002 a VQ Scan was used to show multiple clots in my lungs. In the hospital for 8 days on IV Heparin Drip. Then on Coumadin/Warfarin.

A 2nd but about 9 weeks later. In hospital for 9 days this time, same IV Drip. Was on Coumadin/Warfarin for 9 years after.

My friend, the Spinal Surgeon, suggested I have a Greenfield Vena Cava Filter placed in my groin to help protect from future life threatening events with Pulmonary Embolism. This was also to prepare me for a back surgery he did 14 days later for my ruptured L-3 disc.

Got to know my Nuclear Medicine Tech personally over the years. Ended up having multiple Nuclear tests, 1 of which was a Full Body Test. That one took hours watching it circulate throughout my body.

Hope your whatever procedure they use to detect your clot, shows clear towards the end of next month.

@hckynutjohn - the vascular doctor released me last February. The blood doctor has been a little more cautious. At this point, they just do the D-Dimer blood test and they have been tapering me down in the Xarelto. genetic testing all came back normal.

I know you've had your issues with clots and using blood thinners through the years. I wish you well,

@gidgetgh It has really gotten to be ridiculous with the price of co-pays on medicine we really need and there is no generic available.

I take Humira for my Rheumatiod Arthritis and of course my Medicare co-pay went up this year to 30% of the cost for all Tier 5 drugs. I estimate my January amount with be around $2250.00. Of course February and on will be less but still.

At least I go from Stage 1 to Stage 5 in cost really quick.

I do plan on this type increase each year but it still stinks.

I’ve been taking xarelto for several years. When my doctor first prescribed it they gave me an information package from Jansen (drug manufacturer) about getting on a program with them to among other things get a reduced cost. Anyway even though I have Medicare plus my supplement I qualified. I use to have to show the card I received from Jansen at CVS when I picked up prescription but about a year ago they stopped asking. Just thought I’d share this information as an option you might want to contact Jansen to see if you might qualify for a similar program. With my supplemental insurance and Jansen program I pay $10 out of pocket for 90 day supply. Another option is looking into GoodRX (think that is name), I know people who have saved $ on their prescriptions using GoodRX but not don’t know about xarelto. Before getting on this program I was paying $$$ out of pocket.

The price they charge for certain meds is pure robbery and greed. They'll say...well it costs so much for research, blah, blah, blah. You've got to wonder what the CEOS, and other people in their corporations are making. Probably millions. I'm sorry you had to pay so much. There's no excuse.

@Cwoldie My husband is on Eloquis...it is expensive as well. He asked his doctor about the Watchman procedure, but he is not a candidate. I hope your husband qualifies..
