Just seeing the word Vertigo makes me anxious. In 2015 out of nowhere I was taken over by vertigo/balance issues. I had to hold onto something like a cane or walk as close to the wall as I could for stability. My vision was affected as well. After numerous Neurological tests & Dr's it took me saying "When I park my car, I still feel like the ground is moving beneath me" for him to say oh, ok here's who you need to see. He sent me to a Neuro Optometrist who diagnosed me w/ motion induced disequilibrium, convergence insufficiency & focal seizures. He also said my eyes are picking up the flickering of fluorescent lighting where normally they aren't. I was told I could no longer work on computers bc this would create these "seizures" over & over. When I say I was devastated, I mean devastated! I'd been at my job (HR Mgr for DirecTv) for over 25+ yrs and within 4 weeks of appts I was out. My glasses were given a blue tint for blocking issues and my peripheral vision was trying to take over. I was advised to apply for Disability which I did in Jan of 2015. I was approved in Aug 2015 & I'm still on it at 58yrs old. If you have access to Neuro Optometrists maybe look one up? They do way more testing for Vertigo & things of that nature and you may find out more. I'm on a anti-seizure medication & I've not had a flare up in 4 or 5yrs but the fear is still in me. Sorry I've rambled on as I said, I saw the word Vertigo and my anxiety paid me a visit.

Hi Sherrikay,

I'm sorry this happened to you. Did it come on suddenly? I had this happen about four years ago. I woke up in the middle of the night, with dizziness, and I had no clue where it came from. After numerous trips to the doctor, I was told that it was a viral infection and would go away on its own. I will tell you though, it took a sweet time going away. Little by little the dizziness went away after a month. It could also be due to crystals in the ear. It's a bummer that you had to miss your date. I'm sure you were disappointed. If it doesn't go away in a few days, I would call an ENT doctor.

The Epley maneuver also worked for me. I had it done by a vestibular specialist at the ENT office. It was the only thing that worked for me. Vertigo can be caused by an inner ear problem that is a result of calcium breaking free in the inner ear which sends confusing messages to your brain about your body's position which causes vertigo. I have a friend who recently had this performed by her doctor and it solved a problem she had for weeks that wasn't resolved by medication or other treatment. I hope you feel better soon.

If the Doctor gave you Anti-vert, it's pretty much useless and Dramamine will work just as well without the drowsiness.

I get the crystals in the ear on occasion. Usually happens suddenly like when I turn over at night and the world starts spinning. Last year I had an extended bout and went to my Ear Doctor's balance & fall clinic. The lady ran several tests on me, a couple with a helmet-like thing on my head that measured what my eyes did following certain movements. She did perform the Epley maneuver on me, but I leaerned a couple of things. First, I always thought the movements were supposed to be done quickly and that is not the case. Second, she said it was important to know which ear was the problem and to start the maneuver with that ear or else it could make it worse. I can never tell which ear is the one affected.

Lately, I'm often dizzy first thing in the morning. I have to sit on the edge of the bed a little bit before standing up and walking. A lot of that may be sinus related since I also often wake up with headaches and Sudafed, either just Sudafed or Sudafed +Pain depending on if I have a headache) helps.

If it continues, your Doctor should check you for Meniere's disease. There's no cure for it, but there are effective treatments. I have a friend that has that.

I get vertigo really bad. I just have to lay down and not even move an inch. It gets so bad that I can't lift my head, open my eyes or use the restroom. It is horrible and sometimes comes on suddenly with no warning. It lasts for hours.

If I feel it coming on, I take BONINE. I always carry that drug with me.

When I was a child, I could not ride in a car or bus.... after a block or two, I was throwing up. I get motion sickness too.

Hershey Med Center located near me has a program for those who experience severe vertigo, but Medicare won't cover it, so I won't go.

My heart goes out to anyone who suffers from this. I went to get out of bed one morning probably 17 yrs ago and the room started spinning! I was fine as long as I was upright but it was scary when I would lay down or get up. Mine lasted 3 months and then one day it just went away. I never took anything for it and have not had it since. Take care.

Last time I had it was a few years ago. I was in the ER and the doctor told me he had seven Vertigo patients in the ER right now!!!! I remember it was August. I thought maybe it was seasonal? (this time it got me in October) They did the Epley maneuver on me but it made it worse. And I was just starting to feel better. Wrong ear, maybe, as I see reading these remarks. So right now I'm better this time but it's been weeks. I haven't gone to the ER or any doctor this time. I still have the prescriptions they gave me-the nausea was terrible. I won't take them they make me feel awful. I already felt awful! So here I sit waiting for it to die completely-I'm almost there. Not going to church because if I look up or down, it comes on me still. I suspect it's stemming from my neck positions, not my ear/ears. Misery loves company. This is all good to know.
