Selecting New Eyeglass Frames

I was just examined by a Master Optician whom I have used before. No one else I have seen can get a prescription as accurately as he.

I commented that since my last appointment I had let my hair go gray. I said I guess I needed frames to complement my gray hair. He said that frames should complement your skin tone, not your hair. He further commented that the brown frames I had worn in today kept me from looking washed out. So I chose a pair of tortoise frames that have gold metal ear pieces. They are me.

He said that women change their hair color, but skin tone is consistent.

I recently has bilateral cataract surgery and wear glasses for distance/driving only. Before the surgery I was extremely nearsighted. While wearing gas permeable contacts my entire adult life, I still used eyeglasses when not wearing the contacts. I had to have glasses that were frameless because the thick lenses would pop out of regular frames. I wore these for many years. This time I opted for the same thing. I really like being able to see all of my face. The lenses are almost invisible.

Interesting side note is how hard it was to shop for this style this time. I was quoted $400-500 for side/ear pieces that screw into the lens. Just unreal! I ended getting my current pair from Walmart and paying $25 after my insurance kicked in. Interestingly, Walmart had the widest variety of frameless styles.

That's so interesting. Thank you for sharing! I have a mix of black, gray and white hair, and recently ordered 2 pairs of eyeglasses. One is a matte black wire frame and the other is a black and gray tortoise. My skin tone is a neutral olive-medium. It's funny, skin tone makes a lot of sense but I was thinking hair color should drive the choice which was why I went with he two that I did. And people in the shop helped me choose them from the small pile I had set aside and I am excited to get them! I'm also excited because it will be the first time I've had more than one pair of glasses at a time.

I can't imagine not wearing glasses. I'd feel so exposed! Lol.

My skin tone has changed as I have aged.

I always wore jewel tones, or what I call crayon colors- true blue, red with blue undertones, no yellow, kelly green.

My skin tone has changed, I now look better in rusts, burnt orange, browns & tans.

I can't explain the difference, I'm sure the Beauty gals could. But I noticed one day my foundation was no longer working for me. I guess I went from a cool to a warm & the foundation looked so fake.

Ok.... I just choose frames that I like. I chose black frames in a modern frame with slight cat eye. Very different from the purple ones and the tortoise I had been wearing. I do like having two pairs of glasses so at some point I will get a red pair. I obviously don't take glasses frames as seriously the op.

I have a truly neutral toned complexion. Currently wearing glasses with ivory tortoise frames. Just ordered new ones in a silvery grey metallic. It makes my grey/silver hair pop. The sunglasses I ordered are an ivory color with gold color accents and brown polorized lenses. So I'll have the best of both worlds.
When you have to wear glasses all the time, it's important to choose frames carefully. For fit, color and how they flatter your face. Eyeglasses are a part of your overall look. They are too expensive to just grab a pair of frames off the rack and call it good. Even with insurance, my two pairs cost over $450

I never heard that ....

I've worn glasses since I was 6 years old .... I've been retired 12 years ...so you can calculate how long that's been, and how many pairs of glasses I've worn in all those years. (It's fun looking at old pictures ... seeing the various "eyeglass phases" I went through!)

I don't follow any "rules." I usually try on a LOT of frames, and pick out the color and shape of the frames that I like the best that day.

I recently donated a drawer full of old eyeglasses .... every shape and color.

When I was in my 20's and getting my first pair of prescription glasses for close work, I was told that women should keep in mind that "eyeglasses are jewelry for the face".

It has influenced every eyeglass decision I have ever made ... for readers or sunglasses, in addition to prescription glasses.

Try on a bunch of frames and when you think "I LIKE that!" get it. Face shape charts and not always true, neither are any other frame rules.

I have a very small pale face and have had very light hair for years--blonde to platinum blonde. Dark fames are the ones that look best on me by far. All who have helped chose agree. You'll try on one that feels good and looks good and you like--buy 'em!

My reading & computer glasses have all been tortoise shell (brown/umber/gold) to go w/ my blonde hair, brownish eyes and neutral skin tone. I've purchased all but one pair of reading glasses from COSTCO. The one time I did not I about had a heart attack when I got the bill for the glasses and frames.

With my sunglasses I do go more wild w/ the colors ... right now favorite are black and white that @monicakm recommended on a beauty thread. I've sold more of those sunglasses this summer. LOL.

(And no the picture below is not me. I am only about 40 years older.)

I wear wild color glasses and get compliments all of the time! I'd never wear boring brown, yuck.

I can never see what I look like in the prospective choices without corrective lenses in them. Eyeglasses shopping is difficult when you can't see yourself. Then, there's the problem of all the styles sitting on a big wall display, making it very hard to choose when displayed in this way.

Even though we ultimately make the final decision, I always ask a salesperson (or two) to tell me which frames they think would look best on me. I am always surprised (or shocked!) by what they select, but it provides more food for thought.
