Cold sore remedy?

I woke up with a cold sore and wondering if anyone has any non toxic diy remedies or anything that helps heal it? It is so sore!

I don't seem to get cold sores but my husband did. The only help he found, without going to a doctor, was using 'Abreva' which can be purchased over the counter. It's a viral medication (only one approved by the FDA for cold sores) they helps to heal and lessen the duration. It also eases the pain with cold sores. I hope this helps you.

I use Blistex. It is over the counter and it helps.

Strange, but I only get it when I am under stress.

I've gotten them since I was a little girl and I'm now 62. I usually pop the blister and dab rubbing alcohol on them throughout the day. I also use valtrex (prescription from the doctor), and it helps tremendously.

@Flatbush My husband's triggers for cold sores were stress too or over exposure to sun.

I've had them all my life. Sometimes very badly. The best thing to do is get them to dry out asap. Sometimes that means popping them open like you would do with a blister of any kind (with a sterilized needle and don't spread the liquid from the blister) and then place a cotton ball with peroxide on it for several minutes. It's either peroxide or rubbing alcohol (which stings). The alcohol works better for me but pick your poison.

Next time if you feel one coming on, apply Abreva right away before the blister forms or shortly afterwards.

The amino acid arginine is found in foods like beans, nuts and chocolate. Arginine is food for the virus and can make me break out like crazy if I eat too much of those kinds of food. Also sunlight and stress.

Also look up taking the supplement L LYSINE. Every time i stop ,i get a cold sore,the virus is in our system,once we get it.

Another vote for L-Lysine, 1000 mg, cheap and available at any pharmacy. If you have trouble swallowing large tablets, buy 500 mg and take two.

Valtex is great if you dont mind going to your dr for a prescription, and Carmex ointment helps.

I take lots of lysine. Since I don't eat many foods which contain it I need to take the supplement.

H-Balm by Forces of Nature.

I understood an outbreak was due to cold viruses, not by what people ate or did. Whatever....! This natural herb solution has eradicated any outbreak for me for years. I think it's the Northern White Cedar that is the healing agent with the antiviral properties.

I've been getting cold sores all my life. Abreva work very well.

Agree with others who said Abreva. For me I had to use it at the very 1st sign (tingle). If I was at work & had to wait til I got home to apply, it was too late. It didn't do any good.

Abreva's not cheap. I only got cold sores every couple of years, so the Abreva would expire. Which meant I had to purchase a new one every time. When I get one, my whole bottom lip triples in size & soooo sore. So nasty, I've had to call off work because of.

No doubt that I got the virus from someone else who kissed me, but the first time I got one was after a bad sunburn when I was about 25.

Tried all kinds of stuff before Abreva. Nothing worked for the pain or the size.

Cold sores are not caused by the cold virus. It's inappropriately named that b/c some people break out with cold sores when they have a cold due to the stress on the immune system which weakens it and causes the herpes virus to proliferate.

Herpes viruses thrive on the amino acid arginine which everyone has in their system naturally. But when arginine levels are high in people with the herpes virus inside them then it can cause sudden outbreaks with no other reasons at all.

Sunlight (UV radiation) also causes stress on the immune system giving way for the virus to multiply also.

Abbreva helps with the pain & does somewhat shorten they stay of the sore.

I used to get cold sores quite often, and before Abreva came out, as a home remedy, I use to crush an aspirin and wet it a little to form a paste and dab it on the cold sore, after a while you could feel the pus being drawn out and drying up, may take a few times to apply the aspirin paste but it did the trick for me.

Doesn't sound like this is your first one. Have you ever thought about finding out why you get them in the first place?
