You wont believe this......

just got back from my dr appt.low and behold,I am down 6 lbs,and BP was perfect.in the next few weeks,i have to have blood drawn.what I don't understand,in July I have 2 checkups.one for medicare, I will have part b by then and 1 for wellness.front desk told me medicare requires this.all new to me.

you do not have to get the Medicare well check. I have said no for 5 yrs . I refuse as it's a BS check up . Bp, pulse ,Weight that's it. They can't talk to you about any problems or order tests as they won't be covered. You can just keep saying no. They can't make you do it.

@Luvsmyfam That's good news. I *always* ask why something is needed to be done and I always get an answer.

Check with your doc's office and ask what the blood draw is for. It's likely a good reason but it's always best to be pro-active and keep informed.

That's been my mantra for 40 years.

Uh, mine did not go as well. My white coat syndrome was on full display today, I gained five pounds in a year, and I experienced the worst pap smear I've ever had in my entire life.😩😲😱

@Love my grandkids it is for normal things like potassium, cholesterol, and something else she said.im just glad visit is over.sometimes I tend to stress over nothing.

@Love my grandkids I always ask "Why" for every single test any healthcare provider wants. We need to advocate for our own health. I once had an unnecessary test done, questioned it afterwards, by then it didn't matter. Always ask "Why" or "What is this for?".

@Luvsmyfam, I'm having some issues (pain/burning) so I just went to the new Physician's Assistant at my PCP's office as I could get an appt. there quicker. Checking for UTI and other causes for the pain. She did tell me today that if this pap smear comes back okay then I would not need to have anymore. All I'll say is if this ends up being my last one, I went out with a REAL BANG!!! Have mercy! 😩

@pupwhipped @Luvsmyfam Paps are the worst! I always said I'd do a mammogram a day if I never had to have another pap. I don't have to get one every year, but I wonder if there is an age you reach where they don't do them anymore.

@Lucky Charm, this pap literally was THE worst. Ha! The PA told me today that after the age of 65 they're no longer necessary. But, of course, you should ask your own doctor about this. After the doozy I had today I do hope I'm done!

@xrayrox Agree.....I have refused for many years. It's good to have it if you want it - but another way medical people get an opportunity to bill our insurance co.- medicare.

I wonder if some do bill - behind our back - it's allowed but we never have to sign anything to verify the wellness check over actually done.

The Medicare wellness checkup is very beneficial for some patients, like my elderly mother who has advancing dementia. This yearly exam gives insight to her overall condition, physically and mentally.

I cooperated and had my initial Medicare wellness checkup at 65, as well as one last year, but cancelled the one scheduled for me in April. I see no point in repeating this office exam yearly when I maintain my health thru regular appointments.

Based on what has been posted here about this subject before, Medicare wellness visits vary greatly from office to office. Mine was a lot of questions that give insight to whether I live in a safe situation, have what I need to live my life, I'm not abused or being taken advantage of, my eyesight and hearing was tested, along with memory skills.

To me, the biggest advantage of a Medicare wellness visit is that it encourages people to do advance directives, and have them on file in their medical record. It took this exam to get my mother to do her living will and sign a DNR. She thought all was good because my brothers and I know what she wants, and are in agreement with doing what she wants. Now she finally has everything in place.

If I recall correctly at 63 I had my last pap smear. I had never had an abnormal pap and she said that would be my last. I was thrilled.

So your fear of the scale was all in vain! I personally don't settle for terms like: "average/normal/perfect", I want numbers and I will decide how that compares to numbers in the past, and also the numbers I strive to keep on the best side.

Nobody is going to draw blood from me without my knowing exactly why, and for what specific things that blood test will tell us. When I was on Coumadin(Warfarin) for 7 years! I was having full blood draws on average 3 times a week, some weeks all 7 days. That was for my INR/ProTime readings.

Those and other full blood draws probably are well over 1,000 of them. A Phlebotomist can no longer draw from my right arm because of built up scar tissue. The syringe cannot penetrate the scar tissue.

No medical person is going to do anything invasive on my body without my knowing Why! You lost me on your Medicare things, I have no idea what you were talking about. It appears others here may understand.

So what's next besides waiting for whatever results come from the blood tests they took? Thanks for your update, sounds like you are gonna live! =^..^=

My Dr. said if you have had 10 years of negative reports you don't need them anymore.

Beware when having the 'annual' wellness visit that you don't have it too early. It seems I had mine early and recently received a bill for almost $250 for it. Yes, that much.

Mine is only about 5 minutes of questions. Medicare refused to pay, since it hadn't been a full year. Well, I don't intend to pay, either.

The staff needs to review the records. They needen't ask me to remember a 5 minute chat months later, since in my case, I don't find it productive.

@Luvsmyfam - the "welcome to Medicare" visit is NOT required. I didn't bother with it.
