Geriatric Doctors - Do You See One

I am considering making an appt to see one. I am getting nowhere with my current physician and my health concerns are getting worse. So I feel maybe a geriatric doctor can address some of the changes my body is going thru at my age. Any experience in this area?

I likely will in future but my sis and BIL have switched to geriatric docs and are quite pleased.

I see an internist (Internal Medicine specialist) A board certified Internist is competent to handle my hypertension and a few other issues.

I think it is more important to have a geriatric doctor than most realize.

When my mother broke 8 ribs, her primary care put her on ibuprofin.

She started to get really depressed which may have been natural considering but this was very unlike her.

I looked up ibuprofin and found a website for seniors that mentioned that ibuprofin in the elderly can cause depression!

I doubt even most good internists or primary care doctors may know how so many medications given every day without thought affect the elderly differently, and or the different doses that should be taken into consideration depending on age. Just like a pediatrician specializes in child care, not just the general population.

I do think geriatric specialists are not as prevalent and some not even in many counties or cities.

There are some very good doctors who are versed and keep up with all ages of their patients, but not many.

Even then, a lot of doctors are not really knowledgable of how routine medications can affect each patient differently.

If you have concerns by all means switch. I'm a big believer in going to the right doctor for the issues a person has. It is their field of expertise.

My husband has several health issues and he goes to different doctors for different things and has made a big difference for him.

I have a younger female doctor and I really like her. I use to just walk in a clinic when I needed something except for yearly examines. Best thing I did was get myself a family doctor. She makes sure I get all the things done I should be doing. I am pretty healthy but things change over the years and I don't plan on being ignored or classified as just old either.

being new to area I had difficulty finding Dr. accepting new patients. I don't know if is due to pandemic or because some Drs. only accept a certain number of patients on Medicare. Finally found a NP. Met for first time. Suggested I have blood work following week. went back she changed 1 med I had been taking for years. I do not do well when my meds are changed. Had difficulty talking with her. Felt she was really not interested. Only have 15 mins with Dr. now. I would like to find a different Dr. instead of a NP. NO offense to NPS. Do I just call ofc. and cancel my next appt or do you ladies think I should tell her personally. By the way She is a geriatric NP Been practicing a few years.. I would sincerely appreciate advice from sweet ladies on our board. Thank you

My primary care doctor sees all patients but specializes in geriatrics. He's very thorough and attentive.

My PCP is board certified in both geriatric and internal medicine. IMO it's important to see a doctor who is familiar with the problems people of a certain age have. We take children to pediatricians. So why not as we get older go to someone who has special knowledge of our problems.

We need more geriatric specialists as Boomers are aging. but young MDs aren't selecting geriatric medicine as their specialty; even internal medicine is lagging. the Money is in Neurosurgery, Cardiology, Plastic Surgery....

my internist doctor is getting up there. he's 80. he's the best!! i hope he never retires! but he did hint at it.
