From my observations, the three footed style seems much more stable.

I'm often concerned when a lady comes in whee I am a stylist and has the straight style. All it would take is a child running past her to dislodge the cane if it were bumped.

Agree.the 3 footed cane is very substantial. I had (have) one for my husband - it served him well.

Got it at a local medical supply company. (store front retail)

I would suggest you speak to your doctor about getting one. They can be covered by your medical insurance as durable medical equiptment.

You will have many choices and the medical supply company can help you find the best one for you and your needs. They will also make sure you get the correct height.

If a cane is too short or too tall, it will be a hazard, not a help.

Lightweight (aluminum usually), adjustable, soft handle for your hand comfort and which can lean against things and not fall down, good non-slip tip on the bottom. There are a couple different style of handles, so if you have the opportunity, try different ones but most are comfortable to the wrist. I cannot imagine the ones with more than one tip at the bottom, but I guess good for those with poor balance, so if you need that one, check it out for sure.

I like the Carex Soft Grip Walking Cane, height adjustable with wrist strap and latex-free soft cushion handle (available from the well known vendors on the internet) Mine's blue.

You can make this with furniture grade pvc pipe 5 feet or ?? pick your size, at lowes or home depot, then get the bottom rubber ends too.

@Carmie That is excellent advice which I never knew till a neighbor of mine told me.

I live in the boonies & this neighbor makes walking sticks & canes for the tenents here from tree limbs in gathers in the woods. He personalizes them for you. He'll put your name on it or a design of your choice. He does this as a hobby for profit. He's very proficient. He gives you a receipt.

I hike in the woods & he made me a walking stick.

Last week I put in an order for a "cane." I wanted the upside down L shape that has a soft rubbery handle for comfort. That is when he asked me if I was covered under my insurance for one. I checked & I was. They told me to mail in his receipt & they will take care of it. They already know I am currently under tx & "may" be in need of a cane in the future.

Here is my walking stick.....

The nobs w/the white dots are deer heads. At the top of the stick is a $5 casino chip (Ballys Casino) that I found on the sidewalk. My "real" 1st name is on the other side in red, green & black letters.

I have one I inherited from my father. It wasn't used as a cane, but more of a prod for when he purchased cattle for the family meat market.

But I am looking for one for an upcoming cruise....just in case.

We went to Walt Disney World at Christmas time. We knew the lines would be long and would be walking many hours.

I went to a Medical Supply Store before we went. I have essential tremors and knew I would need extra support. Looked at all the different canes and talked to the employees. We decided on a 4 prong cane.

@sarahpanda Not sure how a cane will be able to help you. If you need as much support as an adjustable 4 prong or would a regular cane give you the support you need. I thought I would buy the Hurricane but it has a pivot base. I could not handle that kind of movement. Not sure if that would be best for you.

Not sure how long or often you would need the cane. But it was nice going to the Medical Supply store. They adjusted the cane to fit my stature.

PS - not sure if you have decided what style that you want. BUT I was surprised what a selection that Walmart had for canes. It was almost half of an isle near the Pharmacy.

I was given a 4 footed one in rehab when I was learning to walk again..very stable.I try not to use it now ..but I do take it with me..It's also great to get in and out of the bath tub/shower.

I would think a multi-prong cane would be nice, just being able to let go of it momentarily after you need both hands to move or lift something or after sitting it stands on its own and doesn't fall over or you don't have to lean it against something.

DH started using a cane several years ago but we both hate the metal ones. I ordered him 3 beautiful canes from a maker in the Ukraine. The canes were surprisingly inexpensive for the workmanship but the shipping was expensive ( hence 3 with one shipping fee). He loves all 3 and they came in less than 2 weeks.

@sarahpanda not sure what your need is for the cane, but I just wanted to pass along if you needed something to help with some balance and be something beautiful, there is a company that sells canes (and crutch covers) they are interesting and gorgeous - the canes come in three sizes (sm, m, l). If you wanted to check it, the name of the company is orthoglam. and then add the .com. you can browse what there is - sells via amazon. they are out of stock of some of their items, more inventory is on the way so not everything is showing at this moment on amazon.

I have a "Hurrycane" a 3 footed cane that can stand alone and is adjustable in height. I purchased it when I hurt my foot last year and although I can walk OK without it, I LOVE it and continue to use it. I feel more secure having it and it comes in handy in various situations!!

I bought a "Campbell Cane". It was designed by an orthopedic DR. It is adjustable and folds up.

I usd it in Disney World and had people stop and ask me where I got it....
