I bought an Omron Platinum about a year ago and as of a couple of weeks ago it suddenly isn't reading correctly. I need to replace it. I'd prefer the style with the cuff for the upper arm and one that just gives a single reading rather than averaging three

Any suggestions? TIA

For the last 11 years I have a wrist monitor by Reli On, it is Walmarts own brand, but made by Omron. No issues with it, just replace the batteries. It is very accurate, I take it to my doc appts with me.

@Qwalker

Having spent many weeks in the hospital several times over 14 years, I have checked my Wrist Monitors against countless machines in the hospital. And yes, some nurses and doctors actually still use the Stethoscope, for checking blood pressure.

This I can tell you. I trust the readings on my Wrist Monitor more than some machines in the hospital. Many times the Tech taking the BP is asking questions or just yakking. Talking and or the wrong arm/leg positions can alter true readings by many numbers.

In all 72 of my Cardiac Rehab Classes, the first thing that was done when you got there! Was a Cardiac Nurse with a Stethoscope checking your BP when you signed in for that session. My Wrist Monitor was close to exact on many of those sessions.

As you know, just like one's Heart Rate, BP changes throughout the day, mostly dependent on what one is doing at the time. The most accurate BP and Resting Heart Rate numbers are as soon as your eyes open for the day. That is a pretty accurate Heart Rate and Blood Pressure reading as a human can get.

And similar to a scale, while numbers my not be exact, you know with a Wrist or Cuff Monitor, if your BP goes out of whatever it normally reads during similar activities. So a 130/75 might more accurately be a 125/72, which changes nothing in relation to a possible Pulmonary/Cardiac problem.

Have checked my Wrist Monitors enough to know that are as accurate as a person or a machine that takes my numbers. With my 2nd Heart Attack my Omron told me exactly my problem. My left arm BP was 95/65, normal for me. My right arm? Their was no BP, thus I called 911.

hckynut

I have the oddest things happen to me. Thank goodness for my age I am relatively healthy, but am prone to weird health issues.

One is BP readings. I worried myself silly regarding horrible blood pressure readings and I know that makes them even higher. Turns out the real issue for me is with monitors - even in the hospital. I now always insist on having my pressure taken manually. Was at Dr today manual BP was 124/82 manually.

When I was having these awful readings my cardiologist said to bring in BP monitor and he will check it with my monitor and him doing manual. They weren't even close. (His office does always does manually, they do not even have monitors in the office). DH uses the same monitor with no problem. It is me - one of the wierd issues I have I guess.

I bought an Omron, too, and took the thing to my doctor's office to have them 'calibrate' it. Turned out my Omron is very accurate. You can also take your bp monitor to any ER and they will calibrate it for free. 'Calibrate' means all they do is compare your monitor readings with readings they get with their equipment which is standardized to be precise and accurate.

Turned out my Omron is very accurate. You can also take your bp monitor to any ER and they will calibrate it for free. 'Calibrate' means all they do is compare your monitor readings with readings they get with their equipment which is standardized to be precise and accurate.

@SilleeMee When I saw my Dr.'s office nurse the other day, I bright my machine to do a comparison. I asked, but she didn't know how to calibrate it.🤷‍♀️ I wish I would have known/thought to go to an ER. DH pitched ours since it was off so badly. I'll remember next time, if it ever happens with the next one.

@JeanLouiseFinch

Home BP monitors can't actually be calibrated. That is preset at the factory. What can be done is compare readings you get from your monitor with readings your doctor's office gets using their's. That way you can see where your home monitor reads in comparison to one that has been calibrated according to standards. It's a good idea to take your monitor with you each time you go to see a doctor.

@Drythe

I fall into the same category as you, small wrist. Haven't measured it for years, but anything I wear on my wrist that has a strap with holes? Usually have to use all but top couple of holes to fit. When I wore a watch I always bought the flexible type band.

Wear my Heart Rate Wrist Monitor when I ice skate. My treadmill/Recumbent and my NuStep all pair up wirelessly with my Polar Chest Strap Heart Rate Detector. Each have the HR window on their electronic readouts. Thus, I don't need to wear the Wrist Receiver to know my HR.

Not sure what's up with the Wrist Omron for you, but I have had several models going back, I believe, into the 1980's, and they have been pretty darned accurate for me.

Now these HR things they wear on their wrist? The ones I have tried, my friends, weren't even close to my Chest Strap Monitor. Told my friends, when they wheel you into an ER, or want to do an EKG, they don't put the Leads on your wrist. It's always on the chest, with a minimum now of 12 leads. Why is pretty apparent, for accuracy.

My norm is usually 90/60, pretty close eh?

hckynut

I have the Omron arm monitor since my dr told me the wrist cuffs aren't reliable...but now they use the wrist cuff in his office....so I use the wrist cuff and it works just fine. Much less hassle than the other one.

They would take BP readings at my dentist office with a wrist version. On one occasion, they sent me home and wouldn't work on me because the reading was high. I knew the machine was off because I was just in my NP 's office the day prior, where the nurse took it and it was normal. The other day, I talked with the nurse and she said to get the arm style because the wrist kind aren't accurate.
