I was told that low Vitamin D can be responsible for depression. Talk to your doctor about it. I'm taking 2,000 units of Vitamin D recommended by my doctor and no longer feel sad or depressed, feeling really good for a couple of years. But don't take it without talking to your doctor and taking a blood test.....

All excellent suggestions, but often depressed people don't want to do those things or anything at all.

Sometimes they don't recognize they are depressed. Men will often deny it because they think it's a sign of weakness.

Many people will take a pill, though, because it doesn't take much effort, one of the reasons why antidepressants have been so successful.

These sound good and I'm sure they can't hurt to try but they aren't as easy as they sound especially if a person is truly depressed. I agree with another person that said they might help if someone has a case of the blues.

I'd love to spend some time everyday out in the sun unfortunately where I live we can go days to weeks at a time in the winter without actually seeing the sun.

I've been told so many times that I need to not worry so much and my response is usually, do you think I would spend all my time worrying if I could just stop.

As for people taking a pill because it's easy (as another post mentioned) maybe they've actually tried some of these things and they haven't worked. I refused to take a pill for OCD and anxiety for many years. I finally realized that my mental health problems were just getting worse and finally decided to take a pill and it has helped me so much.

There is a big difference between having a bad day, a few of them, or feeling down or feeling the blues, and depression.

Then there are levels of depression, 1 of which is being diagnosed by a Professional with Clinical Depression. I can personally attest that one suffering from that level, is not interested in anything in life, much less any of the 6 things mentioned.

Anyone that has suffered and been treated for Clinical Depression knows the empty feeling in and of their "whole physical and mental being". And also know they need professional help, the sooner the better.

Like other words I cannot mention here because of Guidelines, they used to have a true meaning. Now they are used so often to describe a person or their activity, they have lost that any or all of their meaning.

"Depression and Panic Attack" seem to be used when someone is startled, or having unpleasant things, come in 2's and 3's. Anxiety/Panic Attacks are not being nervous or shocked at something. For most they are a "real fear" where the person has no idea where/why, or what it is they fear. Many other things fall into the "phobia" category, not "Panic Attacks".

hckynut

Many of you responded how I was going to respond. I think these are good general rules but sometimes it takes a lot more. I have found CBT, cognitive behavioral therapy, to be extremely helpful to me in redirecting my thinking and negative behaviors. I am starting a gratitude journal today to focus on what is good in my life. But people who have serious depression need more help usually. It is not bad to seek the emotional wellness that we all deserve.
