Toenail Removal

i hate to even talk about this....just grosses me out...my toenails are a mess....full of psoriasis...very uncomfortable...podiatrist said she can remove the nails that are causing me the most problems....has anyone had this procedure....how was your healing process.....undecided what to do......thank you....

My younger sister had two toe nails removed a few years ago( both from her big toes). She said the procedure and recovery weren't as bad as the pain the diseased nails caused. I hope this helps with your decision.

One of our children had an injury that required part of a big toenail to be removed. It was done in the podiatrist's office and was a relatively quick procedure. They numbed the area, removed a portion of the nail on each side and applied an acid the borders, meaning nothing would ever grow there again. Healing went fine but the nail is half the size it originally was.

It will be forever disfiguring and will always probably prevent you from wearing sandals.

my toes are very unattractive....just recently donated all my sandals...gently worn...to Goodwill....haven't been able to wear sandals in years......

Right before the virus shut things down, I had a toenail removed. My doctor was trying to save the nail, but on my 3rd visit I told him to take it out.

It was the Big toe on my left foot. He also had to remove a few pieces of my toe itself to get it completely removed. Had it done on a Tuesday and went ice skating Wednesday.

Had a "limp in my getalong" walking, but skating, the worst part was getting my wrapped foot inside my skates. Now that did hurt.

I have no idea how long it took heal. It did not limit what I could do, in any way, so I just didn't make a note of my recovery time.

Last August was my second time to have one removed on the same toe. It is a piece of cake.

Never had nail removal done but have watched a show called the Toe Bro when it was on and altho the procedure look horrendous, I can imagine how much relief someone would get from removing a bad nail. think toe nails are over rated--i would trade relief for pretty toenails anyday if available and you can always use stick on toe nails too--they work very well. but just being able to walk without pain is a no brainer for me. feet are your whole life!!!

If one has a fungus and the toenail is removed, wouldn't the nail grow back?

I would think the numbing would be the worst part?

My pinkie toenail as grown back twice. Both times it was removed no numbing was necessary. A bit of very quick discomfort when my Podiatrist pulled it off then he sands down any rough edges. In and out of his office in about 15 min., that includes waiting in his lobby.

I worked for a podiatrist for almost 20 years and am very familiar with these procedures whether it is a border that continually gets ingrown or total permanent removal.

Usually there are no complications. If you heal slower or have diabetes could be a complicating factor, but I've never seen one fail to heal eventually. Keep in mind it is a chemical burn to the nail bed that prevents regrowth, so the wound is treated as such. Sometimes, years later, a piece of nail might regrow that will need removed, but that is an easy procedure, too.

Usually shiny skin is left where the nail used to be. Our podiatrist said you could go ahead and apply nail polish there for open toed shoes and it will mimic the appearance of a nail.

The permanent nail border removal leaves a much narrower piece of nail with free edges that can get caught on stockings, etc.

@GrailSeekerThanks for your expertise. My toenails are very curved and they're always getting ingrown, especially after visiting the podiatrist where they cut them so short. I've been to four different ones, I've asked them not to cut them so short but they don't listen. Now I try to cut them myself. My manicurist was the best but I stopped getting pedicures 18 months ago due to Cov*d. I'm almost ready for toenail removal I think.

And you would be right, for most people. When my doctor was getting ready to stab my toe, his NP tried to start a conversation. She was blocking my view of the doctor. Why?

After doing mine, with me looking around her body, he told me. He was surprised that I didn't move(just gritted) my lips. Told me he just came from another room giving the injection to another lady patient.

Guess she jumped up and while swinging her arm, hit his regular nurse in the nose. They were tending to her bleeding. He told me I was "one of the rare ones".

It did hurt, but I have had worse.

The big toes are different. I have had so many "black nails(blood under the nail)" from running, I lost count of how many I pulled out.

Pinky toes and the others are much different. Ever notice the difference in thickness of the big toenail? The big toe, unknown to many, is a humans balance point of the foot.

Pain and/or injury to them is all it takes for one to notice how hard/painful it is to walk. Walking flexes the toes, primarily dependent on " Big Daddy".

I can assure you that the surgery my doctor did on my big toe, was not a few seconds procedure. Would I consent to do it minus a local? Probably not, unless?

I have had 2 Colonoscopies with no anesthesia. Give that some thought if you have had a Colonoscopy and woken up part way through it. Pleasant? Ahhhhhh, no!
