Vaccine Distribution

They are saying on our local news tonight that the distribution for the first round of vaccines will be based on each state's population. I don't remember what the number was for our state, but they did say that it would not be enough to treat all the health care workers in the state.

Also, it will not be available to children or pregnant women since it was not tested on them (or at least not enough of them).

@Icegoddess And, unfortunately, some of the least populous states need it the most.

Why were people not wearing a mask, social distanting, and washing hands?

NYC schools are closings the infection rate is at 3%.

The schools in my area of NYS will probably not open this year for in person instruction.

I wish folks would follow the rules.

It is a pity that all healthcare workers can't get it promptly. No doubt the systems will set their own priorities.

@Icegoddess @One of the ideas those in charge of distribution have is to distribute the Moderna vaccine to places that do not have major colleges and hospital where the -70 cold storage vaccine can be stored. The bigger cities with major colleges and labs set up to be able to use the special freezers are most likely to be sent the Pfizer vaccine. They are considering sending those smaller communities the Moderna vaccine because the cold storage requirements are for a higher temperature and these communities can get the right freezers to store and distribute it. I heard this on a podcast about distribution last night. The guest on the podcast had been on a consultation team meeting with the leaders of the government's distribution team and he explained what strategies they have discussed. Right now they are having an issue getting enough special gloves to handle dry ice for those involved, hiring persons to do the work with the distribution using the dry ice and obtaining enough dry ice.

No vaccine has been approved for distribution. A lot will be learned when scientists go over the data from Pfizer and Moderna. So far, all we've had is press releases from the firms and other promotion, which means nothing.

I think it's premature to discuss distribution without knowing whether what the firms have produced already, without approval, will be acceptable or if it'll have to be tweaked or tossed. In addition, the study data may help the powers that be determine the best groups to have a first shot at a vaccine. For example, with the surge in cases nationwide, if it turned out that a sizable number of test subjects experienced days of flu-like symptoms requiring bed rest, it might be unwise to vaccinate health care professionals en masse. If older patients experienced more adverse side effects, they might not be the best group to push to the front of the line.

It would be wise to remember that there are other vaccines in the pipeline that may not employ such a novel mechanism of action, and some may feel they're worth waiting for.

There is an important meeting of health professionals on Tuesday to decide the priorities for vaccines distribution (most likely health care workers and the elderly in group settings will be among the first candidates. I also read (last night) that Pfizer is already preparing to fly huge loads of vaccine to staging points this week. They got a waiver to fly with 5x the usual limit of dry ice on a plane. Another interesting point is that Fire Stations and car washes ( they're heated)may be included as distribution points. Post Office trucks may be used as well.

Im sorry, I'm not understanding. I've read about the need for refrigeration but what does heating have to do with it? and why car washes? I'm confused.

@shoesnbags : I don't know for certain but all I can think of is people would be more comfortable during Winter months in a climate controlled setting.

Not sure what their information source is, but she'll have to take it and is ready to do so.

I am posting this as a courtesy for those who wish to take the vaccine, or who will be mandated to take it as a condition of employment. If all hospital or nursing home staff are compelled to take it the same day, what will happen if everyone needs to call out sick the next day?

From the article, "One North Carolina woman in the Moderna study who is in her 50s said she didn’t experience a fever but suffered a bad migraine that left her drained for a day and unable to focus. She said she woke up the next day feeling better after taking Excedrin but added that Moderna may need to tell people to take a day off after a second dose.

“If this proves to work, people are going to have to toughen up,” she said. “The first dose is no big deal. And then the second dose will definitely put you down for the day for sure. ... You will need to take a day off after the second dose.”"

Well, @ALRATIBA, if I want news regarding my town or county, I trust the local news. Believe me, no national news broadcast is going to report on my out-of-the-way corner of the country.

Our local news reported that our state will only receive about 1/2 the number of doses that is needed for all the doctors, nurses, and medical staff in our state. I guess they'll have to draw straws to see who gets a vaccination!

I hope first responders and teachers are among the first getting it also. My son is a first responder and is out there everyday with people I assure you are not wearing masks or cleaning their hands! Teachers have been required to back to work inside schools....they have a low chance of getting it from kids but they certainly can get it from co-workers.

FYI..........today's New York Times, has an article, in the Sunday Review section: Find Your Place in the Vaccine Line. Enter: age, city, and it will tell you what number you are in line for a vaccine.
