Blood thinners

Can they cause headaches, I have been on Eliquis post op since my hip surgery, I have 5 days to go. Can they casue headaches, i have had an intense one since my surgery and I am pretty sure it is the blood thinner.

Any one have any experience.

The doctors says this is not possible, but I know what I feel

DH takes Coumadin (blood thinner) daily for a clot in his abdominal aorta, but he reports no headaches.

Hope your headaches are resolved soon!

@I am still oxox I was on Eliquis for 2 years and did not have headaches. Could it be due to anesthesia? I think I heard that was possible. Hope they go away soon.

Surgery was over 4 weeks ago I would think not from the anesthesia. Headache and stomach issues are listed as the top two issues and I have both right now, thanks for the input

I was on Coumadin/Warfarin for over 7 years. No headaches. As for the new(?)ones like Eliquis/Pradaxa etc.? I would not take any of them, not even temporarily.

I thought the eye mask was giving you headaches. I would talk to your doctor.

I have a family member that is an Anesthesiologist, and she has said it can cause headaches.

However, DH went on eliquis. He was like a child kicking and screaming about blood thinners. He claimed it gave him a headache (I rolled my eyes at that) because I figured he was looking for any reason to not take a blood thinner. He was switched to Xarelto and he's had no complaints. While a headache may not be a "common" side effect, any med can effect anyone differently. In his case, the eliquis did actually give him a headache.

Thanks for following my health so closely, I changed the eye mask and still have headaches.

The side effects of Eliquis is headaches and gastric upset, both of which I have

The way I see it, you have two options.

You can either stop taking it and see if the headaches go away or you can grin and bear it for 5 more days and see if they go away once you're done with it.

It's a bit strange that "the doctors" say a headache with Eliquis isn't possible when it's listed on BMS's own Eliquis site:

"Call your doctor or get medical help right away if you have any of these signs or symptoms of bleeding when taking ELIQUIS:

[long list of bleeding-related problems]

Headaches

I would contact the doctors again and press the issue.

I was on coumadin for 3 yrs due to a Blood clot DVT in my leg.

I have chronic vein insufiency now.

I do remember getting headaches. I was also in my 30's during all of this.

Hi, John, just curious as to why you say the negative things about the newer blood thinners, I know so many on them with no issues, mostly for A Fib, has to be more pleasant than taking Coumadin, thanks, Shel

I would never suggest to anyone to quit taking a blood thinner prescribed by a person's doctor. That should be up to the patient calling the prescribing doctor.

Blood thinners are not one that anyone "should just quit", that can be a fatal mistake. I had 2 hockey player friends of mine that were prescribed thinners. They both decided on their own to quit. Both of them died of PE.

I was told by the widow of one of them, we were all friends, that her husband didn't think he needed them any more. 2 days later she woke up and found him dead.

I don't know about these newer meds, but I know quite a bit about PE and Coumadin/Warfarin, along with INR/ProTime blood test numbers, and exactly what they mean.

I quit taking thinners, but not without the "ok" of my Cardiologist and Pulmonologist. I knew/know my risks and chose to no longer take them. I won't go into that long story. Aren't you glad? 🙂

@I am still oxox @hckynut - after I had open-heart surgery, I was on Xarelto and I still had a stroke! Neurologist said I had a Xarelto fail. 😱 Thank goodness, I don't have any lasting effects from the stroke. Now on Warfarin. Agree I would not go back to Xarelto/ Eliquis. I would be afraid of another "fail." But I'm fairly certain I didn't have headaches. 💗

@CelticCrafter .... you cannot just stop taking Eliquos without doctors orders .... I have been taking it since 2016 & have no problems with headaches 🙂

I am sorry you are having headaches, possibly from a drug you are taking. The very good news is that there are other drugs that also thin the blood, that might not cause you a headache. Please discuss other options with your doctor, and like @hckynut , I would not take the newer ones which have no satisfactory antidote should you experience a hemmorhage from them. Sometimes, what is old is somehow better, even though, in truth, they all carry risks of bleeding.

There is an antidote for eliquis since 2018. Good news!

The newer drugs are also often a safer option for those of us with both clotting and bleeding problems. Many have antidotes.

I would only take one that can be quickly reversed with Vitamin K, and green leafy vegetables @Trinity11 . I do not and will never trust the newer drugs that require such an unnatural remedy, but that's my opinion, and my belief, and I am entitled to it, just as you are entitled to yours.
