As you have aged (60 and up) what changes have you noticed that concern you? Not small but noticeable physical changes i.e. balance and stability issues, overall weakness, fear of falling. I just turned 66 and I am going through feeling unstable on my feet. I am afraid of going up and down stairs. I just feel so unsure of myself.

It takes longer to lose weight and easier to put on weight. I have the typical issues of slightly elevated blood pressure and cholesterol so on medication to control. I am 68. I walk 8000 to 1200 steps a day.

I have back discomfort with the discs shrinking in the lower back. A Chiropractic adjustment helps. I don't do well unless rested and seven to eight hours sleep. I feel more relaxed when I retired at 66.

I can't lift heavy objects very well any more. I can lift 20 to 25 pounds. I used to fill my water softener alone. I don't have the hand strength I used to have also. I am more aware of a lack of balance at times.

My eyesight. I have never needed to wear glasses, other than readers. I'm 65 and I'm starting to squint to see long distance things. My night vision is not as good either. Last time I had my eyes checked, last year, doc said I have also some mild cataracts but nothing to worry about right now. All in all my vision is good but I can tell my vision is going bad the older I get. I can still legally drive w/o glasses so that's okay by me.

@rms1954

Things I notice primarily are similar to yours, with balance being 1 of them. That is why when I decided to return to ice skating, it was either break or injure a lot of my body parts, or go to Balance Physical Therapy. I chose the latter.

I also work on this, now since no skating for 7 months, for 20 minutes or more, every day of the week. Like you, I am much more careful going down stairs than in past decades. Seems to get more pronounced(balance) after 75.

Can't remember a day in most of my adult life I didn't consider myself a klutz. Bumping my head on just about anything/walking into doors(not thru them into them)/tripping over things that weren't even there. I could go on.

Can't say I am in fear of anything as of now. I continue to work on balance/leg strength and flexibility, and try to be more observant of things around me, so I don't stumble on them.

Life goes on and I will just keep spending more time trying to stay even with my physical changes. Regain what I lost? Not even a thought, getting to a satisfactory position, and then working hard to retain it.

hckynut

All of the above, in particular balance. Although I feel pretty stable, I make sure to be extra, extra cautious when climbing things and being in situations where I could fall. I know that as we age, a fall can have far more serious ramifications as we age. We just don't bounce back as quickly or completely.

One other thing I've noticed is that although my hearing is getting worse, I find odd background noises to be much more irritating to me. Like a neighbor using a power saw or even a fan humming in the next room can make me uneasy. Weird, huh?
