Normal urine is slightly acidic. When it gets less acidic, meaning it becomes alkaline, then bacterial growth can occur. Alkaline urine can happen from diet and drugs. The best thing to do is consume things that make your urine acidic. Vitamin C and cranberries will do that. You can buy pH (litmus paper) and check the acidity (pH) of your urine. They do that in the lab, too.

People who eat a lot of veggies, fruit (citrus...I know that sounds contradicting but it's true) and dairy may have alkaline urine...vegans/vegetarians may be some of those people but not always.

I had a revolving door of UTI/Yeast. My gyn put me on Rephresh about once a week and I also take Andrew Lessman's Cranberry Extracts before bed (there is also a small amount of cranberry extract in the Women's Ultimate Wellness that I take in the morning).

No issue.

However, I started experience what I thought was a UTI and after extensive testing with a urologist (I insisted on the tests to rule out things, she told me what it was the first visit), menopause can cause the tissues to change/shrink and it feels like a UTI but it's not. When I get this, about once a year due to fluctuation in hormones, I take Uribel for about 7-10 days and it calms it all down.

Maybe that is what caused my problem. I stopped drinking it. So good to have your informed advice again.

I would also add that I take water aerobics and was going almost every day and sometimes taking 2 classes a day and that may have contributed to the change in pH.

Also, I stopped taking baths. This was something my doctor asked me to do for 6 months or not put anything in the water. So basically soak in plain water and then shower after with soap. She didn't want me soaking in a tub with something that could change the pH.

This may be conincidental, but I also changed to eating Paleo and so not eating sugar and yeast (among other things) also may have played a role in eliminating this issue.

I was focused on the cause, so I tried a lot of things to see what helped.
