I heard someone at school call it that?? Like I said, don't remember too much!!!

Christmas Tree disease is actually pityriasis rose which is different than Fifth's disease. It is thought that pityriasis follows viral illness. Usually someone will have a herald patch before they break out in the rash. This can be up to a few weeks earlier. There is no treatment, it just goes away on its own, but can take 6-8 weeks to completely resolve.

Fifth's disease can be very dangerous to pregnant women, however with respect to kids going to school, there is no problem as they are contagious before the rash comes out. Once they rash, they are ok for school.

No. My son had this as a child, and his dr said it was a form of measles. He was allowed to attend school. It was uneventful, and did not seem sick.

When my daughter had 5th disease (many, many years ago, in grade school), the school sent her home & requested a dr.'s slip before she could return. I was told it was a childhood disease. She only had the spots on her arms & legs...........so maybe it's 2 different diseases--never heard it called slapped face cheek???

Yes. Cycles around for a few weeks, lessening each round. If you have a compromised immune system you can get it as an adult. I did. Not fun.

Also, pregnant women should avoid contact. The slapped cheek look is true. Looks like you put waaayy too much blush on. In small children it looks like they ran and ran and ran. For most people it is a non issue.

My son had it when he was little and I caught it. We had a brilliant red rash that seemed to come and go when you got hot.....kind of like hot flashes. It also made me physically ill with flu like symptoms. It was really uncomfortable and they told me once you have it you are more apt to get it again. I now have arthritis and I suspect that 5th. disease was the culprit.

I might add it seemed to last for a long time .

I had this in my forties. I was so sick. I also had a really weird symptom with my hands. They would curl up like I had arthritis starting in the PM. I could not open them. They in the AM they would be OK. Then the next day they would curl up again. So so weird. Never thought I would get over it. Ended with a rash over my whole body. Lasted for several weeks but I read some adults can battle symptoms for months. Hope you get better soon.

I was told this by the first doctor I saw who diagnosed me with rheumatoid arthritis. She had asked if I had been in the presence of any child with Fifth's Disease in the last six months. I had . . . my little grandson. She told me that's what caused my RA to emerge.

I have never heard or read that since, and I keep forgetting to mention it to my long series of rheumatologists.

ETA: I did just read that adults who actually get Fifth's Disease can exhibit side effects very similar to RA for a limited time. But it is not really RA.

Actually, I was just dx'd with this about 2 weeks ago after many tests. It started out as a weird rash that would come and go and look totally different at times, sometimes it itches, but not always. They gave me a steroid cream and said I could use claritin for the itching up to 4 times a day. When it first started, it looked like ringworm. This has lasted about 6 weeks. It is finally about gone. This rash has affected ever part of my body except my face, mainly feet and hands.
