I was recently diagnosed as having Osteopenia. My doctor told me to take a Calcium and Vitamin D supplement and suggested Caltrate. The dosage on these is two per day, but I've only taken one the last two days.

I like the fact that they're chewable as I've taken Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc before, in pill form, years ago and my body didn't digest them.

Anyone take these? I just started taking them yesterday. Really not sure if I like them. I was taking Andrew Lessman's Calcium, but the dosage wasn't high enough. I have a hard time digesting calcium in pill form, so that's why I tried Andrew's powdered version and now the Catltrate.

I do not take these but just wanted to mention, and am not sure if you are aware....the body can only absorb about 600 mg of calcium at a time. So anything over that would be passed through your system. Maybe taking them more often through the day and adding an additional vitamin D (beyond what is included in the calcium pill) would be benefical but that should be discussed with your doctor. I know there is a product available by prescription called Calcitonin, which is supposed to slow the rate of bone thinning, so that may be another option to discuss with your doctor. I will probably be going in that shortly if my next bone density scan shows more bone density deterioration. Good luck!

If you get some calcium in your diet you may not need to supplement calcium. You probably need magnesium though. It is more important to supplement magnesium for bone health than calcium & you must add it, too, if you add calcium.

I have osteopenia, too. Do some research. Seriously. Most doctors have no clue about vitamins & minerals and how to take them so they actually make a difference. It is not their area of expertise. Calcium should not be taken alone. It can mess things up. Minerals & vitamins work together.

I get plenty of calcium in my veggies. I do take one Andrew Lessman calcium capsule (250mg) per day but only because I had them. I'd been taking 1500 per day - 500mg at a time! Yikes.

I took magnesium capsules for years. They made no difference because the form was not absorbed. I have been taking liquid ionic magnesium for quite a while because it is in the form we use & is absorbed and used w/o going through the digestive system. I also use magnesium oil which is absorbed through the skin. It works great, too.

In the interest of keeping it fresh, I rotate my calcium supplements, and have tried many of the chewables, which are a nice finish to the meal.

I also like the Adora supplements which come in milk chocolate and dark chocolate. A little pricey, but I get them at Whole Foods.

Whatever you do, DON'T chew Rolaids and think it's being absorbed into your system! You might as well take nothing at all!
