Do you use mouthwash?

I'm hoping that dental professionals will chime in here.

I stumbled onto an interesting book called "Kiss your dentist goodbye" The dentist is not suggesting that we wont need our dentist but has some preventative guidelines.

Apparently there are 3 types of mouthwashes that have different functions.

1. Chlorine-dioxide --Closys Neutralizes acidic food and drink

2. Antiseptic rinses--Listerene, etc

3. Fluoride-Act Restore

And recommends 6-10 g of Xylitol (mints, gum) daily

Just Listerine.

My teeth are all either capped or bonded.

I see my dentist twice a year.

I don't know about mouthwashes, but watch ingesting Xylitol. It can be irritating to the stomach and gut for many people.

Xylitol appears on most lists of dog toxins.

I use Act twice a day. Like the green one better than the blue. Not sure if it helps but the dentist had coupons for it so I'm in the habit of using it now.

I have crowns across the top fronts. I faithfully brush and floss daily, but for some reason I had redness in the gums and one spot that bled occasionally. My hygienist recommended brushing with Crest Detoxify and rinsing with Closys Silver. I've been using both for a few months now and see improvement.

Before bed I use the electric toothbrush, floss, and water pik. Then I use a generic version of Listerine before popping on my ortho retainers.

My teeth and gums are in good shape, and I go to the dentist once a year for a cleaning.

@granddi As a retired dental assistant of 30 years I brush my teeth 3 times a day for at least 5-7 minutes. Trick is to brush "softer and longer" which cleans the teeth much better and protects the gums from abrasion. I floss and use Listerine (I use the purple one for the fluoride) every night. I told my kids when they were in high school, brushing and not flossing is like taking a shower and not washing your hair. Need I say more?

Neither of them has a restoration (filling) in their mouths ,they're now in their 30's, job well done I guess!

Not a fan of any kind of gum but the sugar free one recommended is good for people who lack saliva due to meds or other health issues. Dry mouth is a big cause of decay.

I found a new and great dentist 10 years ago. Per her advice, and it works great for me, I use Act Total Care (alcohol free only) twice a day.

The first time I bought Act it had alcohol and stung so badly I returned it to Walgreen's and they took it back with no problem.

For a couple of years I've ordered 3 packs of Act Total Care from Amazon and it saves money. I could order it for delivery to Walgreen's but the Amazon price is much better.

i just wrote a post on xylitol toothpaste my dentist told me is so good.. i did research and it has side effects... anyone with any imput? and i looked on amazon where she told me to look and its expensive.. i wanna try but is it worth it. you figure i'd almost have to try it for the 6 months till my next check up to see if its actually working.. but that 7.00 tube of toothpaste is really gonna add up.. i want anyones input if it is any good and anyones experiences...

Found a unused bottle of Crest MW in the vanity - decided to swish my toothbrush in it after every brushing. It freshens the brush - nothing to lose.

Where I live the dental school, rated #1 in the country uses Crest mouthwash. As for the other about toothpaste, I agree, if she's recommending this brand, offer samples. Otherwise, go to the drug store. Why would the ADA recommend toothpastes that are there if they don't work for cavities. Maybe find a new DDS.

I was advised to ditch the alcohol so I use natural dentist I think it's called. It has aloe vera in it and I like it.

@Laura14 , my dentist says the same thing...no alcohol. She also says don't use Crest anything😲. She really dislikes their products. LM

@Lilysmom I got a wonderful hygenist who sat me down and gave me all kinds of training in what I should do and not do about 2 years ago. She was a much older woman who had obviously known and kept what really works and doesn't hop on trends.

I am tremendously grateful to her. My teeth and gums have never been better. She warned me off of the baking soda toothpastes which I had been using since the dawn of time.

She switched me to sensodyne, non-alcohol mouthwash, and unwaxed floss. Best thing I ever did for my health.

I sing her praises every time I go back and someone mentions how good my gums look now. She must be a temp as I only run into her occasionally usually during the holiday season.

Wonder why no Crest? My dentist always says this is a good basic product. However, since I have issues, I have been told to now use Sensodyne.
