My Over-Active Bladder

For the last several years, I have to urinate endless times a day and night. My doctor recommended I take Myrbetriq, 50 mg. I've been taking it for the last 6 weeks and it's not helping. Do any of u have a similar problem and tried this drug??? Are u on other drugs that u could recommend? I do have medical issues so I'll have to ask my doctor.

I got the prescription at Walmart and paid $45 for a 30-day supply. I asked the pharmacist why it's so expensive and she said the regular price is over $400/mo. There's no generic.

Don't know what speciality your MD is or your insurance coverage. Why not try another MD and see what they suggest? 2nd opinion.

I went to a urologist because I really wanted to get to the bottom of my symptoms. My issue is there is something that irritates my bladder about once a year. She insisted it was menopaus related but I insisted on a variety of tests to rule out bacteria, yeast and cancer as well as physical.

When I have this issue now I take uribel for about a week and then I'm fine.

I do think mine is food related and am trying to narrow down what it is that irritates my bladder but it might be hormone related as my doctor insists it is and that's why it's just infrequent due to hormone changes.

I recommend you go to a urologist and rule out a bunch of things and get a proper diagnosis.

Usually a simple test in the office will identify one and they prescribe an antibiotic. You should feel a lot better in 24 hours. Also avoid caffeine and very acidic foods as they can be very irritating to the bladder. Feel better...

What was making my bladder worse was my gyn was treating me for UTI and a couple of other things even though the tests were negative so I was making it worse.

The uribel calms everything down. I have to take it consistently every 6 hours for about a week to 10 days and it calms everything down.

A few weeks ago, I went to a Lab and had several tests taken (I go there yearly). I have 2 cups of coffee every morning with toast/cheese/jam and I get stomach aches regularly. Acidic foods are also not my friend. I have several other medical issues and I'm almost 80 yrs old - so I guess I just have to deal with it.

@kivah , seek the opinion of a board certified urologist. I have Type 1 diabetes and have frequent UTI's so I am aware how irritating they can be. There is help out there, though and I hope you will find a solution.

I highly recommend Azo Go Less. Follow directions precisely and it WORKS. It’s impressive how well it works. The best price is at Walmart. I cannot recommend it enough. Just be sure to use as directed.

@bonappetit Where dd the OP say her Dr didn't rule out the UTI? That's the problem on this board people do not read the post, and go off on a tanget.

Has an urologist ruled out other causes?

Have you had those lovely tests to confirm complete emptiness?

Have your other drugs been considered as a cause?

Have you done all the exercises?

Is there any nerve damage from a stroke or bad back?

It can be solved, but perhaps just not with the first drug tried.

Manny2, you misunderstand.

First, I'm responding to the poster who suggested being tested for UTI.

2nd:UTI is fairly common and would be ruled out first before prescribing Myrbetriq.

I tried that drug was on it for about 6 months.

Be careful major side effect is high blood pressure. I had to get off that drug, blood pressure went off the chart. before taking drug bp was fine, after it was WOW, NEAR 200/80. Am still fighting my high blood pressure am on 2 major drugs and still fighting to get normal bp back.

Did the drug work, it did somewhat. Am on nothing now i can't take anything because of side effects and my uncontrolled bp.

Good luck but watch that blood pressure please. I was told my bp would rise only slightly hahaha, they laughed all the way to the bank and i suffered the consequences.

My sister had similar symptoms. She was diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis...irritable bladder.

She went to quite a few doctors, plus a trip to the ER and none of the doctors came up with the right diagnosis.

Finally, one doctor told her to see a gynecologist/urologist.

There is medication for it.

You may not have it, but it's worth ruling out if you don't.

Yes, I was just about to mention it. It can cause involuntary spasms of the urethra and make you feel like you have to go and can be very painful in some. Some doctors even use Botox to help relax the muscle.

Do you actually have to go every time you visit the bathroom or does it just feel like you do?

Definitely worth investigating if these other things aren't working for you. It's very disruptive especially when trying to get a good night's sleep.

@kivah. It may be IC/interstitial cystitis. IC is usually diagnosed by a cystoscopy and hydro distention of the bladder. IC is an autoimmune disease that has awful symptoms. Urinating almost constantly, pain, burning, spasms are some of the symptoms. For a long time some docs, even specialists, didn't believe this was real.

I've suffered with this for years. I was given various meds, told it was "in my head", told it was menopause, and other excuses. I was finally correctly diagnosed about 30 years ago. More and more is now known about IC. There is no cure, but, there are now a number of treatment options.

I suggest a Board Certified urologist. There are various IC support groups online. There are many foods that affect your bladder.

I tried Myrbetric when it was first introduced. Very expensive and only elevated my blood pressure.

I truly hope you find a good doc who will help you through this situation. If it is IC there a different treatment options. I wish you the best.
