Had to have a wisdom tooth removed yesterday. It already had root canal over ten years ago. It was just "done". It was a pool of bacteria, pain. OUT. Okay, now my face looks like I was punched in the face. PAIN galore. I had general anesthesia. They were very nice to me and the doctor is amazing and kind. I'm a chicken. I don't get it, I've had extractions before and never missed a beat. This one's a bad scene. Like my mother would've said....

If you are into herbal remedies at all, a really great one to help with any infection, including dental ones, is Wellness (capsules) by Source Naturals. If you are taking an antibiotic, you can take this with it, and if you are not taking an antibiotic, this would be great to take for sure for about ten days. I hope you feel better, but if the pain persists, notify them immediately. I waited, hoping it would settle down - bad decision. I had two cavities (one very minor she said) filled and never experienced pain afterwards like that before. Long story short, ended up with major infection that led to lockjaw. Had to take a whole day's worth (6 pills the first day) all at once of Prednisone and antibiotics. Even told by the endodontist to not even wait until I got home to take them. Ended up needing two root canals. So, if pain persists, tell them.

Absolutely call if you don't start getting some relief pronto! You shouldn't have to be suffering like that after an extraction.

Speaking of dentistry, yesterday I had to have a cavity taken care of that was in a tooth under a permanently cememted in bridge. I thought the bridge would have to be removed to get the job done but no....It was all done by laser. My first time with that sort of dentistry.

Just thought I would comment you could have a dry socket. In any case I would call my Dentist and check it out, you shouldn't have so much pain.

I agree with @lovepink . You could have a dry socket. I had all four of mine removed at the same time many years ago. I had awful pain, and it was a dry socket. You need to let your dentist know.

When I had some wisdom teeth pulled years ago, my dentist told me not to bend over from the waist. I don't remember the reason, but he said it could be painful if I did. He also warned me about dry sockets. When DS had all 4 of his wisdom teeth removed, he found that applying moist teabags soaked in tepid water soothed the soreness. Definitely call your dentist about your pain - I'm surprised he didn't call later to check on how you were doing once you got home.

@77yangya With the wisdom teeth being located so far back in the jaw, it does cause trauma to that area when having extractions. The muscles also are affected from the trauma so swelling is a given. While a dry socket is possible (meaning you have lost the blod clot) to have swelling and soreness is quite normal. Did you ice the area and follow post op instructions? Best wishes, hope you feel better but I would give it a little time but you can always call the office or they may even call you today.

@77yangya I am so sorry that you are in pain, and you have me very worried since I am having a tooth pulled on Tuesday. I remember having a dry socket with the removal of wisdom teeth years ago, and it was very painful. Sounds like you have the same.

I did ask the dentist who will take out my tooth about dry socket, and I was told that procedures have changed drastically since I had mine. I wish that I could get out of this tooth removal, but I have a crack in my tooth below the gum line.

Please call your dentist asap and do not wait for the weekend to be over. Take care of it today. Pain does not usually get better on its own.

This! There is just no reason to crown/root canal a wisdom tooth at all. ITA also that it was a money grab on their part.

Mine have been removed and now, as I age, I'm at the point where if they tell me one of the teeth in the back needs a root canal/crown I say to pull it.

I actually had that situation several years ago. Tooth all the way in the back on the bottom. I didn't need that one. I had had the corresponding tooth on the other end of the bottom pulled years ago (can't remember why) so now it matches. But you can't see that teeth back there are missing and they aren't really any more of a necessity than wisdom teeth.

TBH, at this point in my life, I almost wish I could just let them all go and get dentures. That would save $$$ and they'd be easier to care for. As of now, what with my hand issues, for one, my teeth cleaning regime each day is terribly painful. Not the teeth. They're well taken care of and fine. It's my hands and wrists, and on up to the neck. When I do the biggest part of the cleaning (brushing, waterpik, etc) at night I'm in extreme pain by the time I'm done.

I was a Dental Assist. long ago...and the dentist took this poor girl who was deaf and had severely impacted wisdom teeth.....he dug and dug away on her for hours... I was aspirating her in horror......of course he'd filled her w/ numbing but never did get them out and when she got home she had so much pain had to go to the hospital...... She should have seen a specialist.....the Dentist's ego took hold tho.....I never forgot it. Ruined my trust with dentists.

Wisdom teeth are useless and should all be pulled. They should never do a root canal on those teeth. Such a scam.... Too bad and I'm sorry you went through al that for nothing. Well, I shouldn't say "nothing" - I'm sure it cost you plenty......

Hope you don't have 'dry socket'......did he give u antibiotics and pain meds? Rinse with warm salt water........ pain should not be this bad.... Do u have a temp?

I think I was a bit too over zealous the second day. I was so hungry after the surgery because I had general anesthesia. I ate things I should not have so now I'm really taking it easy. The whole side of my face is swollen but the doctor said it would take three days before peak. I've been icing it and began salt water rinses but very easy. I heard that taking motrin with tylenol helps with pain and it does. They're coming out with a pill that has both. I do have tylenol with codeine but it doesn't help long enough. I'll probably be calling the doctor Monday. Thank you all so much for the well wishes. It means alot. XXXOOO

They did root canal on it years ago because I NEEDED an anchor for my removable bridge and that tooth is/was the only tooth on that side in the back that was left. No, dear, NO ONE is gonna pull a fast one on me. You see, dear, you can't bull***** the baker.....

No, actually the tooth was fully developed and useable. Thing of it is, is that I have bone loss and my removable bridge was anchored to that tooth. It worked for over ten years. It worked beautifully. I lost three bottom jaw teeth and that widsom tooth was all I had, in the side jaw. All of a sudden, days ago, pain began with biting down and a bad smell. I went to the dentist and she said it may have to come out. Pockets WAY too deep and bone loss. The surrounding bone will not support the tooth anymore. I decided to remove it and revamp my removable bridge. They can add teeth to it and it will sit on the jaw line connected to three other areas on bottom jaw. I do have one tooth on the other side that's in tact and have front ones so three connections one sit on jaw line.

No, no temp. I began warm salt rinses too. If I'm hurting this bad come Monday, I'm calling the doctor. Thank you all so much.
