I've had them most of my life. Here's my list of what works for me:

Benedryl---topical cream (will help with the itch feeling)

Benedryl tablets to help with the reaction to whatever you are allergic

(note: there are very good generics to this medication so compare the ingrediants and percentages on the labels)

Natural methods that help (along with medication) : Take a hot shower applied to the areas that have the rash. Let the hot (not scalding--just as hot as you can stand) spray on the rash areas. This will trigger your systems response and you should have relief from the itch (not the visible rash) for hours. Each person is different but relief is relief.

Ask your pharmacist for recommendations---there are quite a few generics both in tablet and topicals that can help.

Hope you find relief soon.

It's a temporary relief, but try soaking in a colloidal oatmeal bath. Aveeno makes a good one.

Do you by chance live in an area that's having a high pollen count, i.e., tree and grass, right now? The worse Summer of hives I ever had was during such a time. That's when I learned to eat honey only produced from local bees. The idea is to acclimate your body with local environmental conditions.

I hope you get relief soon, @fortune . I know too well the misery you're feeling.

Hives can be brought on by stress or an allergic reaction. Years ago, when we purchased our very first house, I got hives. I remember using Calamine lotion, as was suggested by a work colleague, and they eventually went away.

If you started a new/different medication, read the 'side effects' as it could be the culprit. Also, a lot of information if you Google it. If it persists, or worsens, of course, see your doctor.

I know I get hives from amoxiccilan but in early March I broke out in raised, itchy, red and white hives all over my legs from my ankles to my hips and from my shoulders to my wrists. I had not idea what caused them. I finally went to the dr and was prescribed a dose of oral steroids. I had been taking Benedryl with no relief. Eventually, the steroids helped but it was really unpleasant. Good luck to you.

Wish I knew what to tell you! I am a long-time sufferer of these things and nobody has been able to tell me why I get them periodically. I have been to so many doctors and get no answers. I have tried benadryl, calamine lotion, cortisone cream, etc. Nothing really helps except for it to just run its course. I try to stay cool and out of the heat when this happens. I hope you find an answer and if you do, please post. Hope you feel better soon!

I am on

a steroid, drops for my eyes to help heal the lesions and tegretol. This afternoon I have a visit with a cornea specialist. This was a nightmare as I was diagnosed with post herpetic trigeminal neuralgia. The pain is my biggest fear and I need to see a neurologist.

Sorry for taking this thread off topic...Thanks for the good wishes.

Hives are usually caused by allergies or stress. Benadry works wonders and Caladryl or Benadryl ointment or gel works wonders topically. Don't ask me how I know this!
