My dentist makes crowns right there while you wait same day. They are called CEREC. He said he has a newer machine now that makes porcelain crowns that are much much stronger than the ones he use to make in office and they will never break. I had to have a 20 year old crown that he put in....replaced a month ago that finally broke that was on a molar. My Dentist said the new crown is 10 times better than the crowns he put in from years ago.

CEREC dental crowns are used to repair and restore damaged or weakened teeth. These crowns are metal-free and made out of a high-quality ceramic material. CEREC crowns are stronger and more natural-looking than traditional dental crowns.Aug 27, 2019

But still ,I got 20 years out of the old crown...

I see no reason to have an ugly gold crown in your mouth!

I'm going for a crown and I asked the dentist what type of crown she will be putting on and she said gold. In the past when I had a crown put on my back tooth I had a procelain because I thought I heard the dentist say you don't put gold on gold. I do have a gold crown on the bottom molar that the new crown will be touching. Has anyone had a gold crown on top and bottom or has your dentist put a procelain crown that would meet the gold. Just wondering if things have changed in 20 years. I know a gold is stronger and it is a molar.

My old Dentist always used gold crowns for my back teeth. As long as they were molars in the back. He only used gold/porcelain on the crown if it was toward the front of my mouth.

He liked just gold crowns because gold is a soft metal. It will mold to your bite and not wear the enamel. And porcelain is strong and can wear down teeth enamel.

Kismet:Yes, things have changed in the last 20 years! Gold crowns were the best for molars 20 years ago. There are more choices now. Gold looks like a pirate tooth, in my opinion, but are strong and can still be a good choice. Porcelain fused to metal or gold is very outdated. Rarely used except in certain situations. Porcelain likely to fracture off of the gold. Tooth colored crowns such as a solid zirconia crowns are nearly as strong as gold, within 1%. The drawback to those crowns is that they are more opaque than natural enamel (More “flat” looking) but are tooth colored making them a great choice for a back tooth. There is a porcelain fused to zirconia choice for when esthetics are important, maybe closer to the front, like a bicuspid. Not quite as strong as the solid zirconia but much prettier, 5% fracture rate. Absolutely agree that you need to know your options and make your choice. If your dentist is not providing you with information and options, you need to ask why? This is YOUR health.

Re: Gold vs Porcelain Crown

I've had to make this decision too and have changed my mind in recent years. Previously, the priority had always been cosmetic appearance. Having a uniform, atttractive mouth of natural-looking teeth was always my preference. However, having had so many porcelain crowns fail over a relatively short period of time, I now consider gold (at least) for crowns located in the back. The gold allows for a comfortable bite and I don't worry everytime I bite down on foods that can potentially break porcelain.

So you have to consider things like cost, cosmetic appearance, your willingness to replace a crown more frequently, and the foods you eat. For me, I got tired of worrying about breaking a porcelain crown everytime I would want to eat a foods that had nuts. Restaurant food presented another challenge since more than once I had a crown chip from something unexpected that should not have been in the food.

I have quite a few crowns, have needed many porcelain replacements, and carry dental insurance that pays only about 1/3 the cost. I won't consider anything but porcelain for teeth than can be readily seen, but for back teeth I now choose gold. I don't love the look, but no one sees it and gold holds up. Another alternative you might ask about would be the newer zirconia crowns. They look look perfectly natural, and are supposed yo be much stronger than porcelain.
