Anyone Hate Ads for Prescription Meds?

Perhaps I am just sensitive, but I detest all the prescription ads on TV. If I hear one more ad for metastatic breast cancer, I'll scream. Serious illnesses are not the place for companies to extract profits. Obviously, these companies are required to state potential side effects. Cancer, tuberculosis, and death just might turn me off to a particular drug. There may be one or two other countries that are allowed to run these ads but most countries are not permitted to advertise. In my opinion, medical ethics should take priority over profits.

I do hate them, and I'm sorry they were ever allowed. My solution -- and it works perfectly, but it's not for everyone-- is to never watch TV. Haven't had it on since last summer!

I totally agree! The prescription drug and insurance commercials make me hit the mute button as fast as I can...and the prescription drug ones are way too long. We have a couple of physicians in our family...one sees patients (the other one supervises other drs) and he says those ads are a real pain...patients come in and demand he prescribe drugs they see on tv because they are convinced they will cure or fix whatever their ailment is. Most of the drugs are " high-end" meaning many major insurance companies won't cover them because they are so expensive...even if he thinks it is appropriate for the patient. Then the patient calls the office and complains about the cost.

Most of the advertised prescription medicines are very expensive. Every time I see an ad I wonder how much less these prescriptions could be sold for without spending millions on ads.

I refuse to listen to them. I put the TV on mute or change the channel as fast as I can.

IMO they should be against the law.

@Vivian Does not bother me at all. I don't know why it would bother anyone... Makes no sense to me.

As you, I'm speaking just for myself...I can't believe you've gone almost a year without TV! I do believe you, but can't imagine myself doing so. I know there are many other things to do to keep one occupied, but...I couldn't do it. Even if I'm reading, I still have the TV playing in the background.

Do you watch programs on your computer, or just to the radio? I know YouTube has a plethora of channels for everyone's taste.

We usually record our favorite shows, so we're able to fast-forward through all the advertising which makes the program much more enjoyable.

By not having a TV, you're able to save a lot of money from cable, etc.

Because of some reallt awful side effects I've had in the past, I very carefully read all the literature that comes along with prescription drugs ... and there have been occasions where I refused to take something because of possible side effects.

Doctors understand .... never had an issue with docs about it.

I am with you. People see ads/tell their doctors that's what they need/NOT! Anyone that wants info on possible new meds for whatever their ills, can Google the info.

Had my GP nephew-in-law tell me that happens. If they are so good for one's issues, why spend money advertising and irritating some?

The decision to take a prescription medication should be made during a private discussion between a patient and their physician. When it comes to high end drugs, insurance companies and Medicare are going to want to see some sort of step therapy showing generic and lower cost alternative drug use/failure before authorizing a high end drug. Usually the high end drugs will also require pre-authorization and high co-pays. Depending on the drug, some manufactures have their co-pay cards that can be used for commercial insured patients only. Leaves out a huge segment of the population. The whole system is a mess.

Or you can do what I've been doing for many years. DVR and watch only shows I want to see/skip commercials when I choose. Still watching TV and only shows I want to see. Problem solved!

My tv is on most of the time...and I seldom watch a commercial. That time is used for a bathroom break, to get a drink or snack, read a few emails, take the trash out....etc.!

They've become ludicrously prolific and yes, many of them are annoying... And, I'd add, who is naming these drugs? Most of them have such ridiculous names... Also annoying is them using 'modified' (aka, bastardized) pop songs as part of their idiotic commercials... Case in point: to the tune of Go Your Own Way... "COPD says go one way, but I go my own way..." Huh? What? One of the most stupid ad statements ever...
