Doxycycline side effect

I'm taking the antibiotic doxycycline as a preventative measure after having a tick removed and now I'm having a side effect. I looked up the med online and discovered I was supposed to limit sun exposure. I live in the country, I'm on stay at home order, and it's been sunny and beautiful, so, of course I was outside. Now my hands and face are tingling. It's among the many side effects doxycycline can cause. Has anyone else taken this med and have anything similar? For now I'm going to not take tonight's dosage and call the doctor's office in the morning.

I made that mistake once & learned my lesson...now I look for the sun warning for all oral & topically applied antibiotics. Be well.

Doxy can be a hard antibiotic to take. Some lucky people have no side-effects at all.....but I'm more like you, I do get side-effects from it. The tingling should wear off within 72 hours after stopping it. I would call my doctor to get an alternative antibiotic. I hope you feel better soon.

I have two pills right now left to take of this antibiotic. This is only my second time to take it, the first was back in Jan. of this year. Each day I got more and more nauseous with dry heaves. The Z-pak worked for my sinus infections for over 20 years then stopped. So I finally agreed to this one. Two more pills I cannot wait to take the last one Wed. morning. This and massive headaches with it are my only side effects. I have migraines but these headaches are different.

I took Doxy years ago for 2 weeks for a tick bite, it was summer and I sat in sun back then, I had no issues from it at all.

I would not stop taking the medication. The tingling you are experiencing is your sign that you got too much sun exposure, possibly sunburned. My daughter has taken doxycycline for acne breakouts, and must use extra precautions to prevent blistering sunburn.

Don't stop taking the meds. Stay inside or if you must go out cover your hands and face. Do you have gloves or a wide brim sunhat?

Thank you all for your replies. I was advised by the clinic to stop taking doxycycline, so I will follow the orders of the medical professional I spoke with on the phone today.

I took Doxy a few months ago. I didnt go out in the sun but my face got purplish red & very hot. I had to put ice packs on my face to cool it down. Dr switched me to a Z pack the next day.

I am concerned about you stopping the doxy because my sil had neurological Lyme and it scared all of us. It took forever for a diagnosis and she truly suffered with horrible nerve pain until they confirmed Lyme. Then, she had to have IV antibiotics every day for 4 weeks,

When you're bitten, a short course of doxy is either total prevention or cure.

@Elri I thank you for your care and concern. I realize what the doxy is for, but right now I'm trusting my health care professional right now to help guide me. She said that I should stop, because the longer I take the med, the more likely more serious side effects may occur. Lyme disease is rare in my state. Less than 10 cases are reported every year. I will keep a close watch on my condition and if anything changes, I will get to the doctor's immediately.

I can tolerate it pretty well.

It leaves a nasty and bitter taste in my mouth, and I also feel nauseated while I'm on it. Other antibiotics can also do that to me too, but that one stands out for me.

I just try to deal with it because I've had allergic reactions to other ones.

Yeah, you do have to be careful with sun exposure while on it, and then you also have to time the eating of dairy products and any calcium and magnesium products that you use/take, too.

Sorry to hear that you're suffering side effects, but hope they subside soon.

I will say this about doxycycline: Best sinus infection eradicator of all time for me. Wiped that infection out within 48 hours! Loved that Providence Urgent Care doc who prescribed it.
