Hello

The doctor just prescribed Glipizide ER to lower my blood sugar. I was taking metformin but had to stop due to stomach issues it caused. Does anyone know how long it takes before the Glipizide ER gets to it's full potential? The only thing I can find out there in Google land is "several days". It has been 3 days so far and my numbers are no better than they were. Has anyone taken this before that can speak to this? Thanks

I've been taking Glipizide ER for years. Like most medicines the effects are different for each person. It took me several weeks before It began to control on a regular basis my diabetic numbers. Even after a number of years, you have your up and down days. No diabetic drug can control your sugar numbers when you eat high amounts of carbs like bread, potatoes etc. I take two tablets per day...one in the morning and one in the evening. Also depends on your weight, if you are very small you can end up with too low numbers and if you are heavier you can stand sugar levels up to 150. I am heavier and if I go below 100 I start to shake, perspire and get clammy. Glipizide keeps my numbers between 106 and 130 and that is fine for me. Your doctor is the best person to talk to about the drugs you take for diabetes and I'm sure he will adjust them to suit you. Just check your numbers to start and make sure they fall within the range best for you. Keep in mind if you eat too few carbs you may end up with hyperglycemia sporadically. When this happens, you need to eat some sugar or drink orange juice. Just don't go below about 76 in your numbers. Good luck.

Based on the experiences of my husband and I, it took two weeks for the medication to level off in our system, and start seeing a difference in our blood sugar readings. I was not able to take Metformin due to gastric issues that never got better, but have been able to tolerate JanuMet.

Hello, A fantastic site for information and support is Tudiabetes.org. There is a live chat and many groups to join. The folks there will stop their chat and answer your questions immediately. I am a Type 1 diabetic and was diagnosed May 2013. I was in serious trouble with managing and those folks got me on the right path. Following their advice and reading the recommended books and now my blood sugars run 85-125 on a fairly consistent basis. Before joining Tudiabetes.org (which is free) my blood sugars were ranging 300-600 following the ADA recommendations. Hope that you find this information helpful. Wishing you good blood sugar numbers! Cat

Hi emmiesmom,

Yes, I am following Dr. Bernstein's diet. I eat 30 grams of Carbs a day. I also use information from Gary Scheiner's book Think Like a Pancreas. The ADA recommendations had me eating 180 grams of carbs a day and a low protein, low fat diet which was a disaster for me. Following Dr. Bernstein's plan has enabled me to sharply decrease my insulin doses, both bolus and basal. I wish more people would check out his information.

I just started taking it this week

I was on it for about a year and a half at 1000 mg extended release. The extended release is easier on the stomach but still caused issues. Dr wanted me to double it to 2000 a day and the gastric issues were just too much. That is when he switched me to Glipizide ER. The Glipizide worked great for the first week and a half and then my numbers started creeping up and up. My husband finally figured it out. It was the metformin going out of my system that caused the numbers to go up and up. The doctor then added Actos. That one cause swelling in my hands and feet after just 3 days so I asked to switch back to metformin at the 1000 mg er and keep the glipizide since it seems to work for a week and a half until the metformin got out of my system. It takes metformin at least 2 weeks to start working and about 6-8 to see the full effect. Good luck! Be sure to take with food.

I was pre diabetic ( although when I look at the forums on ADA that is considered having diabetes by many) then I took a weeks dose of prednisone for foot pain then a month later I'm diabetic although I have to be honest I do eat too many foods with sugar and high carbs. When I search prednisone a lot of people say that it raised their blood sugar but the official word seems to be once you stop taking it is out of your system and it does not cause diabetes.

They do recommend limiting carbs. The ADA recommends 15-30 for snacks and 40-60 for meals. Then you adjust based on your numbers how many your body can handle within that range. I try to stay on the lower end of the range. I don't think this is considered "low carb" though.

I was told that I was not eating enough carbs and that when a diabetic does not eat at least 15 carbs for snacks and 40 for meals, the liver releases glucose because it thinks you haven't eaten enough and tries to compensate. I was also told to eat at least 15 carbs for a snack and not to go over 4 hours without eating something and to be sure to eat a snack before bedtime that contained at least 15 carbs and protein. (crackers with peanut butter was recommended, not Nabs, but the plain saltines with scoops of peanut butter) to keep sugar readings lower in the morning. I wasn't sure I believed them but tried it anyway and it worked. My number actually went down when I ate a little bit between meals.
