MGM Corp temporarily shuts down their L.V. buffets

MGM Corp is temporarily shutting down all their buffets in L.V. (so only the Cosmopolitan, Caesars, Rio and Wynn are left among top tier casino buffets.

It's probably a good idea. Hopefully they can come up with specials to keep the staff working.

Yesterday, DH and I went to lunch at one of our favorite Indian buffet restaurants here in Silicon Valley. Normally, we have to wait for a table. We were the only dine-in customers in the restaurant. A couple of people did come in to get to-go food. I'm glad to hear that our local and federal governments are working on how to help small businesses get through this period.

DH and I were at the Wynn buffet on Saturday (it was still well attended; 40 minute wait); I'm sure they will close down before the weekend as well.

@happycat most of those jobs are union jobs, and the union is not standing idly by doing nothing. They are meeting with hotel management to work out something equitable for their members. No way should the management brass collect fat paychecks and stock options while the maids, porters, waiters and kitchen staff lose their wages and benefits.

I have never really liked eating from a buffet...but now I will never look at them the same way again.

No, they should not. A lot of companies don't seem to think about the ones way down the totem pole. I have never been to LV, but I have stayed at some places I considered nice and the wait staff was outstanding. I hate to think of people like that losing their income.

I read that wrong, @VegasBusinessWoman, I am glad the union is trying to help them. And I hope this virus plays out soon, although that may be wishful thinking.

A bit off topic, but I heard on the local news that the MGM casino in nearby National Harbor (PG County, MD, outside of Washington, DC) was a ghost town.

Also, the Gaylord Hotel in that area was empty or almost empty.

Normally, that whole area is a bee hive...lots of shops and stores, and, of course, the casino. It has really boosted the local economy.

I do feel for the workers, and there should be a safety net for them. Sadly, I doubt there is. They will not work and go unpaid.

Hopefully there will be some lessons learned from our shared experience with this virus. Wouldn't it be grand if there was (at a minimum) universal sick leave?

I think the gov’t has put a safety net of some kind for service-type workers in these areas. I hate to think of how these no work, no pay employees will handle such a situation as we have facing everyone now.
