I heard last night that 18,000+ people in the US have died from the flu this year. Where is the concern and panic about this? Many have not even bothered to get a flu shot they are so unconcerned. Hard to imagine that they're now in a panic about the coronavirus. If we did have an immunization, would people get it?

I've always been concerned about the flu and get a shot every year. If a new vaccine is developed for coronavirus, I'd be interested in getting it. Probably would not want to be one of the first ones!

I don't believe I have heard/seen the news discuss the flu and its influence on the DOW/Stock Market the way I see it being mentioned in conjunction with this virus.........could that link be the "real" panic?

In the 'flu season 2017-2018, 80,000 Americans died of influenza according to the CDC. This was the highest number in 40 years.

Our local TV news gives regular reports on flu caused deaths.

WHY people refuse to get the vaccine is beyond me.

I'm 72 and have gotten it for as long as I can rememer, at least 20 years, I think, maybe more.

Maybe if these anti-vax folks have loved ones die from the flu they might change their mind. And no, I am not wishing death to anyone.

I resent the implication that I can save my life by getting a flu shot. My husband gets one every year. Out of the last 4-5 years, he has had flu 3 times. China and CDC have been wrong about the vaccination for flu several times in the last 5 years.

I always got one in past years to no avail but I have not gotten one in the past two years, not because I don't want to get it, but because my doctors tell me not to get it because it is moot for me, as it will not work due to my immunglobulin deficiency.

So, please don't sit in your ivory towers and judge me and many thousands of others in this way.

I get a flu shot every year and have for many years. A friend of mine has a relative in her 40's who just died from the flu. She had two young children. I don't know any details, but it's very sad.

My niece had the flu this year. She had a flu shot. She went to the Clinic and got tested and got Tamiflu immediately. It probably cut a couple of days of the flu off for her. She was very sick.

DH and I were just discussing this....why is this virus causing so much panic. I read a lot of news and have not seen this addressed...and to blame those in charge is just ridiculous in my opninon.

We all have heard some say they do not get a flu shot,because it makes them get sick,i have heard someone say that for years,just crazy.

A friend of mine had two of his friends die also; they were in their 50s. Many of our schools have been closed this winter at various times because of the flu.

I haven't had the flu in eons, but I got it this year and felt lousy for weeks. The vaccine was for the Type B strain, but I got Type A.

@goldensrbest I recently heard a woman on TV bemoaning the death of her16 year old daughter from the flu. She said her only regret was not getting her to the hospital sooner. She didn't mention the fact that the girl never had a flu shot.

I just don't understand why people risk their lives and those of their children when flu shots are to be had for free, don't hurt and have been proven safe. Of course people who do get the flu spread it to others, increasing the scope of the epidemic.

@goldensrbest I was this person for many years. As a child my Father made us get flu shots...I remember always getting sick after the shot....as an adult I would not get a flu shot no matter what because of this. So for about 30 years I did not get the flu shot....I was defiant. I got the flu very rarely over those 30 years...maybe twice. Which made me even more against the flu shot.

Now 64, I CHOOSE to get the shot and have for the last 5 years. I have not even had a cold in almost 10 years... I do not get sick or have any problemswith the shot. I am sure that my concerns about the shot over all those years was just being stupid.

I have become less stupid with age😄

I see the hype in this particular virus lying in the fact it was unknown to many of us until it was already out of control in another country.

Thru media outlets we have watched the virus spread like wildfire thru that country, overwhelm a healthcare system, affect every resident in some way whether they contracted the virus or not, and then get carried into other countries, including the US.

We saw a wise physician voice his expectations about the severity of this virus, and then die from it. We fear this virus because it is new, it is talked about nonstop, we know there have been deaths, and we know there is no vaccine.

Every year influenza A and B spreads across the globe this exact same way, overwhelming our healthcare systems and providers, and taking the lives of people of all ages. We have a vaccine available for influenza, we know it’s out there and coming to our area between October and April.

My family and I take measures to protect ourselves against influenza; we get vaccines yearly and keep other vaccines like pneumonia, up to date. We follow standard infection control practices ALL the time, and do what is within our power to do. There is no panic here over the Coronavirus.

I am well aware of the statistics for flu each year. It can be devastating as evidenced by the pandemic in the 19 teens. Millions died. We have more scientific knowledge about the flu, a federal agency that monitors it, and a structure in place to research it and create new variations of the vaccine each year. All of this is missing with Coronovirus because we are at the start of the crisis.

Practice proper hygience, monitor your body, and be proactive.

Please keep in mind that no flu vaccine will prevent anyone from getting the flu. Scientist attempt to create a vaccine that is effective against multiple types of flu. The formula changes yearly. Some years are more effective, others less so. I believe in vaccinations because they prevent pandemics. Heretofore controlled diseases are coming back: chicken pox, measles, whopping cough, etc. Our lack of robust antibiotic development has come to bite us: consider the emergence of rampant staph infections. We need to let the CDC and the National Institutes of Health receive full funding and support for their work. They are on the frontlines.
