We've been told for years --- breakfast is the most important meal of the day!

Must eat breakfast! Eat a large breakfast. I also heard that lunch should be light, and dinner also. Don't eat after a certain time in the evening.

Now, they're saying --- don't eat breakfast! Why the sudden change???

What do you all feel about this?

All the years I worked, I never ate a proper breakfast except perhaps when I was off. I would get to work, and perhaps at around 9:30 or so, I would have 1-2 cups of decaf coffee and a protein bar -- that was my breakfast!

Now, that I am retired, I do eat breakfast -- usually within 1/2 hour of getting up. Cereal, bananna, or something of this nature.

Also --- if you do eat breakfast -- what do you feel is a healthy breakfast? I was told by several people that cereal is not that good for you. But I am not much for eggs, and have somewhat high cholesterol.

If you're not supposed to eat breakfast, then do you eat a large lunch???

It's so confusing! Eat breakfast -- don't eat breakfast! This is good, this is bad!

What do you believe???

Thanks for your comments and opinions!

I never eat breakfast. Never have. Always in too big of a rush to get out of the house to work. Deep down, I've never understood how people could sit down in the morning and eat. It would slow you down so much. also, a little bit of hunger in the day gives me an edge. I seriously believe I think and work better with a stomach that's not full. I realize that others may be different.

I don't eat beyond 5pm the night before and that's just a handful of pecans, so after working out in the morning I have to eat by 7. I don't really care what "they" say, I know what I need to do. My sister cannot eat breakfast until later in the morning, about 10 or after. Works for her.

I hate those general pronouncements as though people are exactly alike.....one size fits all. I don't think so

Just listen to your body, you will soon find what suits you.

My dad was totally breakfast and my mom stumbled around in her slippers until lunch. One of my kids would just die if she was forced to eat breakfast.

There was an intermittent fasting thread here, and lots of us eat on various patterns.

Honestly, I just listen to my body, if I'm hungry I eat, if not then I wait til I'm hungry. I think IF(intermittent fasting) has become very popular so perhaps that's where the no breakfast is coming from. When I do eat breakfast it's either a fried egg, high fiber cereal, avacado on toast mixed with some lemon juice and garlic powder, juice(from my juicer), a shake in my vitamix which is blueberries, kale and some flax seed sometimes a banana, Applegate naturals chicken/apple sausage.

If I eat the avacado on toast, I'm usually not hungry again until later in the day, because of the higher fat content. I think you just have to listen to your own body. I'm certainly no expert on eating, so this is just my humble thoughts.😊

For years I have never EATEN breakfast. I eat my very healthy dinner at about 4 PM. Nothing after that. no snacks. Go to bed about 7 pm.

I wake up about 4AM....I have hot unsweetened almond mild with organic coffee and Medicinal mushrooms in it. That is all....no FOOD all day until my dinner at 4PM. Just my almond milk....I take herbs throughout the day and drink lots of water and drink hot tea.

this works for me. I am going on 65. I feel better NOT digesting food all day while I am busy. I have no issues with blood sugar or any medical issues. I am not a triathlon athlete....no need for lots of food.

When it comes to "they" I ignore a whole lot of what they say! I start my reaction with my mother's reminder to "consider the source."

Sometimes the source has good reason for their recommendations - good experience, good research, good judgement. But I still need to use my judgement about whether the recommendation comes with some hidden agenda or from an agenda way different from my own.

On the specific topic here - breakfast. In my life, it's the most important meal of the day! First of all, I like lots of breakfast foods, but almost as important, is that I like the quiet of breakfast with the time to give thought to my day, to catch up on what happened in the world while I slept, to relax a bit after my early morning walk and stretches. Even on days I sleep late, I'd rather eat breakfast and skip lunch than do the opposite.

As for cereal not being good for us - I don't believe that, but I do believe some cereals are healthier than others and, for sure, what we add to that bowl does matter. @AngelPuppy1 When I found out I have a slightly blocked carotid artery, I gave up frequent fat-loaded breakfasts (eggs, butter, bacon &cheese in the same meal!) and regularly eat plain cereal with skim milk and fresh fruit almost every day. It's been over 3 years since my diagnosis; I still do an annual scan with a vascular surgeon - but as long as he doesn't see further increase in that blockage, I'm sticking to my routine!

NutritionFacts. org has a Breakfast series of videos showing eating

breakfast is better for weight loss.

"Because of our circadian rhythms, morning calories don’t appear

to count as much as evening calories."

Dr. Michael Greger has a compelling point...that the body uses the

breakfast calories differently. But all this is for the one who

'needs a study' before Passing Go.

----------------------

In my opinion, all the 'when to eat' is just noise not to eat correctly.

The food itself is more important than when.

Low Fat, Whole Food, Plant Based & you'll never have to

eat according to the clock. Intuitive eating.

@Lucky Charm wrote:

'they'.....am pretty sure OP means what you read in health magazines, or the medical *experts* you see on the morning/evening news or even online. Can't believe some have never seen this suggested by *them*.

I've only seen skipping breakfast as a suggestion to lose weight through fasting. I suppose it can work if you ending up eating less throughout the day. I don't think you should force yourself to eat breakfast if you aren't hungry for it, thinking it's the most important meal of the day because it isn't. I eat when I'm hungry, and I don't limit myself to just "breakfast" foods in the morning like cereal or eggs and toast. Eat whatever you want for breakfast. I often have soup or a sandwich. Sometimes it's pizza.

I think breakfast is very important, I belong to a wellness program and that is what we are told. We don't have to eat traditional breakfast foods, that's not important. They say that breakfast kick starts your metabolism so that you burn more calories during the day. So, I eat a healthy breakfast....most days. Honestly, I'm not very hungry in the mornings so it's a light breakfast. Like a boiled egg/english muffin/grapes. This morning breakfast will be a protein shake with strawberries and half a banana in it. Left to my own devices, I'd just have my two cups of coffee in the morning and nothing to eat until lunch time when I want food. To be honest, I don't think when we eat matters at all. I think good health depends on what we eat.
