Will...thanks for informing me that oil pulling and flossing are different. I will pass that word around the dental community I am active in. Tell them I learned that on QVC.

AS I mentioned,my experience is from my office only.We are asked DAILY if oil pulling will take the place of flossing. And,as I mentioned, this is mostly from patients with very poor oral hygiene. They are not committed to good oral hygiene, with basically a low dental IQ. I will repeat, this is experience from my office only.

Saw on Dr. Oz last week that "pulling" is very good for your teeth, mouth and gums. You have to take a teaspoon of oil and swish it around in your mouth for 20 minutes, then spit it out. Has anyone every tried this? any thoughts?

Dr O pushes everything & anything for one day.

Do a search for "oil pulling" and you'll find many threads on the subject. Do a Google search and you'll find lots of info on the correct oils to use (most are not good for oil pulling - do not use olive oil) and the many health benefits. Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurveda practice used for treating many things.

It is one tablespoon of oil, not a teaspoon, though some people have to start with less and work up to a tablespoon. Some start at less than 20 minutes, too.

Try virgin coconut oil, or better yet, cold-pressed unroasted sesame oil.

I started with a teaspoon - the amount recommended for children. It was still hard to get used to. It took quite a while but I slowly increased the amount until I could do a tablespoon. I use organic cold-pressed sesame oil. Coconut oil is also recommended but I like the taste of sesame oil better.

You can do oil pulling any time of day & more than once a day is fine - but not really necessary. I usually only do it once per day and usually in the evening.

Bird, oil pulling has removed built-up plaque from my teeth. It is amazing! I tend to get buildup on the backs of my lower front teeth despite all my attempts to prevent it. Regular oil pulling removes it. If I would stick with it I would never have any to remove but I tend to do it in spurts.

Most of the oil pullers that I run into in my dental office would rather swish oil for 20 minutes than floss for 2 minutes.Makes alot of sense huh? BTW..most of us in dentistry have seen poor results for oil pulling. Most of the oil pullers that we encounter are the ones that have poor oral hygiene to begin with and are looking for anything they can do rather than meticulously brush and floss. This is my experience only..and that of my co workers.

Gubby1, flossing & oil pulling are very different. I can't imagine people picking one over the other. That is not really what it is about, IMO.

Most of the people I know who do oil pulling have pretty good habits & just started pulling for the teeth whitening benefits. I never heard a single person ask if they could do oil pulling instead of something else, like flossing or brushing. I tried it because it sounded very weird yet I kept hearing rave reviews. I've always had good teeth & pretty white ones at that. But don't we all want better than what we have?
