Colonoscopy sedation

DH has just changed his Primary care dr and he wants him to have a colonoscopy since it has been 7 yrs since the last one. His last one was fine. His new one is scheduled Feb 5. The instructions sent to him from the place that will do it says he will be given full anesthesia and will be asleep throughout the procedure. He got email instructions saying he would be given “sedation”. I have only had something like Valium for both of mine and that was fine...no pain or stress at all.

What were you given when you had a colonoscopy?

I never heard of full anesthesia for this...and it says he will be able to go home an hour after the procedure. Makes no sense to me, maybe it’s the way they do things now.

I cannot give you the name of the sedation but it is very short acting. You are

out for the procedure but come out and recover pretty quickly. I have had it twice ( in ten years) for my colonoscopies. Nothing new.

Went for mine last year and this was the first time that they actually had an anethesologist put me out. In the past, it's been a low level twilight sort of sleep. One minute I was awake and the next I knew I was in recovery.

I thought they use Versad for twlight sleep, I have never heard anyone having a colonoscopy under full General Anesthesia

My last one was 4 yrs ago...I was given a pill to take an hour before the procedure. DH is 73 now so maybe it has to do with his age. He is quite nervous about it now that he knows he will have the full anesthesia. I had the twilight stuff when I had dental surgery.

I was asleep for mine. I have had three of them. I am a little groggy and after given some toast ,as fasted over night sent home in an hour or so but, not allowed to drive. It must depend on the Doctor? No polyps any more but have diverticulitis which does not bother me with any discomfort. Cant win.

Propofol and Fentynyl, only out for a very short time.

With a family history of Colon Cancer i have to get colonoscopies more often then the normal person....every couple years.....in the beginning it was twilight (like two times) since then (about 5 times) I have the same sedation process as you...........out for a short while totally....then wake up and leave.................i would rather be OUT....when i did the twilight one time i FELT it...and it wasn't good....

I very rarely take meds....but I would so welcome this if I was having this procedure.

A very light dose of propofol.

Administered by IV with a certified nurse anesthetist present.

An anesthesiologist will review your chart & talk to you the day of the procedure.

I also had Propofol (not sure if anything else was added to it). When I woke I felt great even though I had only been out 15-20 minutes and I hadn’t slept half the night.

The anesthesiologist will talk to him about any problem he has ever experienced with anesthesia or sedation.

The procedure is fine and even the hour after you feel so fine!

Its the prep that is so not pleasant.

Before you know it he will be awake and wonder when the procedure takes place!

I wonder if they are describing it as being put out with anesthesia but in reality it is just sedation (which really does put you "out") so maybe its just semantics? anyway you can question them.

I get an anesthesiologist and am out the whole time. It's propofol I think. The procedure doesn't take very long.

My clinic used the stuff that shady doctor gave Michael Jackson, but it is carefully administered. I'm not sure of the spelling, but it sounds like Propofal.

Yep, Michael Jackson's favorite, propofol is what's used in my area.

If his colonoscopy was good last time he should be able to wait 10 years, but since he already has it scheduled......

I have had 2 colonoscopies. I don't know what they used the 1st time, but I do believe this last one was propofol. I came out of it a lot faster than I did the one 10 years ago and I was quite alert. The first time, I don't even remember putting my clothes back on and I went home and slept most of the day.

I also had propofol once when I had an EGD. My previous EGD they gave me versed and another drug. Versed lowers your ability to breathe. I do remember them telling me that. And when I had a dental implant I had fentanyl. I was completely out for all of those procedures, and for me, that is how it should be.

My husband had a colonoscopy this morning. Each time he has one it is a completely different routine. But he also has different health issues and different Doctors.

He was sedated but in all the paperwork, I can not find what drug he was given. He has about 20 pages of instructions and pictures of the different things they found. They are doing tests on some items they found and he will get the results in the next few days.

And yes as soon as he came out of being sedated, they offered him juice and crackers. And since he was feeling OK, they sent him on his way. His procedure was at 7:45 and we walked out of the hospital at about 8:45. He wasn't allowed to drive all day today but that was his only restriction.

When he had his first one about 37 years ago. He really needed me to help him get to the car. He was so affected by the anesthesia. This time he walked out from having the procedure by himself. He said he felt a little woozy but was alright otherwise. So we went out to get something to eat and he came home and took a nap.

Just had my colonoscopy last month, and was out for 20-30 minutes with Propofol in my IV. I was discharged within 30 minutes after the procedure, after my doctor talked to me.

This was colonoscopy #4 for me in 10 years, and the procedure has gotten easier each time. Can’t understand the fear, and why people avoid this test.

They avoid it due to the dreaded prep, the test itself is nothing!!!

Demerol and or versed (versed is like valium).
