Interesting dental visit

I've seen some threads about dental work coming up and nerves. I just had the most unique experience I've ever had that put a much needed smile on my face.

Here's a laugh for the day or a request for your own visit....

I live in the Bible Belt and have visited this dentist for the past 18 years. Not unusual for Christian music to be piped through the building and yesterday the Holy Bible was still front and center in the waiting room as it has been for two decades.

I'm a Yankee transplant and have become used to the area I live in. I only mention this because of what comes next.

I get a hygienist I have never had but has apparently been on staff for 10 years. She makes small talk as we get prepped and asks me what kind of music I like. I am a child of the 80s. She disappears and I hear 80s music start to play.

This is new. I laughed and told her to please play what she likes as she is working and I'm good with anything. She says she likes 80s too.

Five minutes later, she stops and asks me who my favorite artist of the 80s is. Prince.

She disappears again and I hear Prince start to sing. Such service! I am a little in awe as the cubicles next to us can surely hear her music as well. We are not in enclosed rooms just partitions and the music isn't blaring but it's not low either.

Two of Prince's popular songs play and then I hear the strains of Darling Nikki. If you do not know this song, it is highly sexual. I mean first line X rated and continues from there.

I wait for her to stop and turn it off but she doesn't and the X rated lyrics start to play. I literally had to pull my mouth away from her and tell her to please skip this one. It's highly explicit.

She looked confused and said Alexa wasn't supposed to play explicit songs. Um, Alexa lied or is off her meds. Trust me. Turn it off.

I was just waiting for my wholesome dentist, her boss, to come running before he burst into flames and threw me and her out onto the parking lot on our rears.

Before I left, this hygienist went back to a standard 80s playlist, tried to set me up with a wealthy patient who she's married off at least twice so I guess I would be door prize number three, and told me of her disappointment with romance novels which have gotten so dirty.

This visit was the stuff of legend. I always find the good times.

Like you, I am a transplanted Yankee living in the Bible Belt for many years. While my dentist is pretty funky, my hygienist is the sweetest, most naive, straight-laced girl you'd ever meet.

I've often complimented them on their playlist, but there's no way on earth anything remotely risqué would be included!

Well that's the first R rated dentist visit I've ever heard of. Sure beats the boring visits I have. LOL

Thanks for finding the humor all!

I about died when Prince started singing about what Nikki was doing with her magazine. She swore she couldn't hear what he was saying. I can and so can the other four people next to us two of whom literallly can't say anything!!

I enjoyed the man's music and he is a legend but some songs are just not meant for professional settings. Unless they install a pole for dance interludes in between cleanings, not appropriate!

When we go to the dentist there aren’t choices of music or anything. The dental hygienist I have talks and talks and talks. The dental hygienist DH has is silent and he naps through the cleaning.

Are you still oil pulling?

Must be a thing with dentists and religion. I live in PA and years ago went to a dental specialist. He worked with his wife and had numerous other girls working with him. Before doing the surgery, I was in the chair and they all formed a circle and began praying. Remember, this was years ago. Wow, that creeped me out. Years later, I'd heard he'd gotten even crazier and he and his gang actually sang hymns to begin their day. I don't pretend to understand, I'm totally non-religious but that sounds cultish to me.

@butterfly123 I literally am getting back into it today. I had stopped because life happened and then thought I'd wait for my cleaning to pick it up again. I will be a chipmunk again tonight.

I'm positive the word Lord appears somewhere in that song. My dentist goes the easy listening route which works for me. I try to visit once a year. I oil pull too.

My dentist (love him) is totally high tech and has a large screen tv showing nature scenes and a massive play list available at each patient station. I could listen to rap if I wanted, Sinatra, Aerosmith, anything.

That's funny....I think a lot of people don't actually listen to the words of songs! I'm one who does, and if I hear something like what you mentioned in a place where it doesn't seem to belong....I hear it even more!

I don't pay much attention to the music. But, mine is in separate rooms and each room has a TV in it. It's always on HGTV although they always ask if I would rather have it on another channel. What's the point? I'm going to be laying back most of the time I'm there and they don't leave the volume on. I have seen so many episodes of people shopping for houses and then fixing them up after choosing from the only 3 apparently available to them with all the dental work I have had done. I do get to watch while waiting for the Doctor to come in or while waiting for the novocaine to take effect.

I miss Mr. Nose (the gas) so much although it really never helped with the pain, just the nerves. I used to go to a dentist who specialized in children, but didn't care for the woman who bought the practice when he retired. But, the good thing about the guy I go to now is he's maybe 5 minutes from the house depending on school traffic.

The song isn't all that bad. Well, not all of it. My dentist would probably just laugh. He is a talker. He talks to you and asks questions that you can answer with your mouth full. I have been seeing him for almost 19 years.

@Laura14 - Great story! My old hygenist asked if I would like tv on during my cleaning - um, no. The one I have now doesn't ask at all, lol.

The only time I was asked what kind of music I liked was when I was going through radiation. Then they turned off the elevator music and played great music which they turned up when I was coming in for treatment. Put a smile on my face every time.

@riley1 That is so great! It's nice that they think of things like that to make our patient experiences nicer. I'm thinking of asking for disco next time in July. Or gangsta rap. We'll see what strikes my fancy then.
