I had a deep cleaning done about 4 months ago after not being at the dentist for several years. The dentist did it in 2 visits. She did give me novacaine but used the topical first so I didn't even feel the shot.

On a good note, I just went for a cleaning yesterday and what were 4 and 5 pockets have now gone to mostly 2s and 3s. Everyone was so happy.

I too am afraid of going to the dentist. Ask friends and co-workers to get reccomendations of dentists that they love. THere is no need in this day and age to have to put up with a dentist you do not like. Read reviews online and I also agree with the others that the dentists want you to be comfortable.

I always get what they call a ‘topical’ even for regular cleanings. The regular cleanings with that do not hurt, but the deep cleaning did. This hygienist is usually pretty rough and does go deep even for regular cleanings.

I would either call the office and ask or do it when you get there.

I have my teeth cleaned every 6 months under no sedation or local anesthesia. If you have kept up your schedule of cleanings, you probably do not need anything. When you say "deep cleaning," it sounds like the dentist will really need to spend a lot of time scraping away at your teeth and between your teeth. I would suggest having a novocaine injection in this case. Some people have very sensitive teeth and this should also be taken into consideration.

Talk to your dentist about options. Some will use local anesthetic and some may use something more. There are dentists who specialize in sedation dentistry for people who fear going to the dentist. I have friends who always bring a spouse because of their anxiety. If you dentist won't work with you, find one who will.

My last dentist was great and all of her hygienists were skilled. My new dentist (I moved, or I'd not have changed) does all the cleanings himself and he's rough. Even regular cleaning is harsh. But I like everything else about his practice and and the way he explains everything he's going to do before he does it and then as he does it, so I put up with it.

They do not want you to be in any pain, and will frequently pause to check in with you to make sure you are doing okay.

As other posters have mentioned, the topical anesthesia is fantastic; it is applied just prior to the section that is going to be worked on, with no needles, or downtime waiting for it to take effect, or numbing of your tongue, lips or face like with novacaine.

If, by deep cleaning you mean scaling & root planing, the dentist might schedule 2-4 appointments, and do the cleaning by uppers & lowers or quadrants if that would more comfortable for you.

I am posting to encourage you to go. There is so much now that can be done to help us get & keep our teeth healthy Our dental health is very important to our overall health. And, it's self care- you'll feel so much better!

The hygienist paints it on your gum line, and believe me, it works. I have had periodontal disease most of my life, and this topical has made a world of difference.
A good dentist, or periodontist does not want you to have any pain or a bad experience. Because of your prior bad experience, you could ask for a mild anti anxiety Rx to take prior to your appointment. If you do have gum disease, this is a job for for a periodontist's office, as the hygienists are specially trained. It's all about communication. If you do have gum disease, you'll be having that treated & then in maintenance with a periodontist (alternating with your regular dentist) so you need to be in a practice where you are comfortable.
There are a lot of dentist & periodontists out there, and you deserve the best care!

You do not want to have general anesthesia given by a dentist in their office. General anesthesia should always be given by someone who specializes in this such as a anesthesiologist or a nurse anesthetist, under the direction of a doctor. It also would be in a hospital or outpatient clinic setting and not in a dentist's office.

Your dentist should use a local like novocaine or even laughing gas.

If a dentist wants to use general anethesia in his office...run. This is very dangerous and not an accepted practice.

I received several injections, and after waiting for awhile, and still feeling great discomfort, I just decide to go for it. The areas were a little numb, but not enough for me not to experience pain. This was my experience during each visit, but I am glad others had a more favorable experience. They tell you that you should not feel pain, but, unfortunately, that is not the case for everyone.

~~~All we need is LOVE💖
There are deep cleanings and there are root scalings and root planings. You say you think you need a deep cleaning, so I imagine you just want a little more than a regular maintenance cleaning. But either way, I would think that would be on the recommendation of the dentist, not the patient. Back before I went to a perdodontist, my regular cleanings were pretty much he11.
I know for my root planing they put me out. I can't remember about the root scaling which came before the root plaining. I try not to remember that stuff. Thank goodness for the CoQ10 that saved me from all that.
