We just went for Shingles Shot. I have UHC (AARP) and my co-pay was $91.00. Hubby has BCBS hand his was $32.00. Cash pay would be $191.00 That's not to say that the next Rx comparison would be more for BCBS and less for UHC?

Medicare does not consider Shingles vaccine under the wellness coverage such as flu shots.

I have Medicare, plus an AARP supplement. My Shingirx shot was $61 co-pay at my local Giant. My flu shot was free at my local CVS.

I also have medicare and AARP. My cost for the Shingrix shot was $56.00 at Walmart. One down and 1 to go. Walmart will call when the next shingles shot is available. I still need my flu shot.

Wow! As much as I hate my ACA health care plan, I was able to get the Shingles shots for free AND get a $10 Publix gift card. Still doesn't come anywhere close to recouping my investment though at $750+/month premiums and $6500 deductible.

We also have UHC and Silver Script. DH paid $151 at Safeway for each injection earlier this year.

I checked with my pcp, they charge the same amount. So I haven’t decided if I’m going to get the vaccination.

From my monthly drug mail for the same coverage with D/ AARP.

"Your Part D prescription drug coverage has "drug payment stages."How much you pay for a covered D prescription depends on how much is spent ( to that date) on your drugs."

When I first went to get my Shingles shot. the cost was high. I called the insurance number on the back of my card to get clarification. I was advised that after I spent $79 more, I'd be in Stage 2 and the Shingles cost per shot would be $25. I also waited to get my Restasis refilled after I got into Stage 2. The cost savings were shockingly wonderful! So, call that number and have them explain to you where you are in your stage coverage. The agent even thanked me for calling. He said they truly want to help us understand how to best use our insurance. I'd never bothered to make that call in previous years. I'll remember to do that again next year as I plan refills.

I guess I am lucky. I don't have to pay anything to get the shingles vaccine. I was also able to receive the Pneumonia vaccine free.

@IcegoddessI hate to waste money, but when it comes to insurance, most of the time I'd really rather not get back what I had to spend to try to protect myself from a major health, home, or auto disaster.

Last time I remembwer getting back more than a year's premium, I had a water leak which began in a upstairs closet, dropped half of the living room ceiling, and damaged a section of the basement. Sure I collected more thsn my premium, but the aggravation and work - not enough money for all that!

@granddi : I recently got the Shingles shot (1st) at my local Safeway in AZ and there was no co pay regardless of which insurance you have, as long as you are 65. I also got a 10% off grocery coupon. I wonder if the differences in cost (free to approx $100) is dependent on state law differences?

With Part F and BC/BS, I have never paid any co-pays or a cent for anything. Well worth the monthly premiums IMO.

@millieshops I get that, but prior to the ACA I had a high deductible plan and was quite willing to pay for my maintenance, but the premiums were at least half what I'm paying now.

To me the insurance companies never make much sense. They sure have all the rules and there's always a twist .

This is OT -

I got the shingles vaccine the year after it came out.

Good Private insurance paid anything OVER $500.00.

I had been hospitalized with Shingles, and had 3 subsequent flairs.

My pharmacist charged me his cost - $425.00. I had been on the waiting list for a year.

Never been SO glad to spend $425.00!

@Drythe : If you got your Shingles shot more than 18 mths ago you didn't get Shringrix

(it's two shots!). I too have had a mild case of Shingles when I was 62. I got the first shot 7-8 yrs ago and I just got the first of two shots of Shingrix.

@deeva If you've ever had shingles, you'd willingly forgo anything in order to get the vaccine. The pain and suffering associated with that condition cannot be overstated.

I have not had the Shingrix shots. Because of other medical issues I can not have it. 😔

@BirkiLady because they can't be on the same supplement or part D plan, they each need their own policies.

My pneumonia vaccine is free too.

Shingrex wasn’t because we hadn’t met our part D prescription out of pocket for the year. And since I take generic drugs that cost less than $100 a year, I never will reach the out of pocket max.
