People whine about docs and meds costing so much (insurance doesn't pay) but do not want to get treatment and looking for a cheaper option. I understand that,however sometimes you do have to pay. Hope that is specific enough for all.

Well I guess sometimes you have to pay unless....you do not have the money. How many people, seniors particularly have to go without medications or treatment because they do not have the money. Seems that many of the people on these boards have much more disposable income than most of the population so it is easy to say "sometimes you have to pay" without consideration of someones circumstance.

I have a bad knee. I believe that I have osteoarthritis since it's been getting worse over time. So I made an appointment with an orthopedist hoping to see what he says and maybe getting an Rx for physical therapy.

However I decided to call my insurance company before I went. Found out the my ACA plan that costs me almost $1,000.00 a month will charge me $140.00 to see this specialist (not counting anything he may do like xrays) and $80.00 a session for PT. So no I really don't want to pay all of that since I'll be turning 65 in May and will be getting Medicare then....for health services at a MUCH better price!

I don't know if I understand your question or not but nobody likes paying for a lot of out of pocket medical expenses after you pay your monthly insurance premiums.

There are a lot of people making choices out there. Should I buy my medication or should I buy groceries??? Something wrong with that picture IMO.

@Group 5 minus 1 , count your lucky stars if you are one of the ones who doesn't have to chose between food and medicine every month. I've known folks who had to choose. I've known elderly people who had worked all their lives, and they have told me that they couldn't afford their meds if it wasn't for their children.

My own dad has said he doesn't know how they would pay for he and my moms meds if they didn't have good insurnace.

I am in the same boat as you.....but I have to wait a few more months to get on Medicare. I am pretty healthy other than the arthritis and hope to keep it that way until then...

The ACA had many issues that needed fixing but instead of finding solutions it was gutted without a plan to replace or repair it. The same thing will happen to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security if the budget that was submitted to Congress gets through. Just another example of profits over people.

You are preaching to the choir when it comes to medical care for a Type 1 diabetic. Insulin costs me thousands of dollars a year. Both basal and bolus insulins are two of the most expensive drugs in this country. And to think when it was first discovered it was supposed to be for "everyone" no matter their financial status.

I have been looking for a Medicare plan Part D that will cover my insulin and I am looking at thousands of dollars in co-pays. I researched and some don't even cover my Basal insulin which would be about $1000 a month in addition to all the other meds I need to stay alive.

So, yes, I know you have to pay!!

@hckynut ACA costs depend on your age & location. In addition, depending on your income you could be eligible for a subsidy which I am not (but I still have a mortgage which they do not take into account)...I think that's where the "affordable" part come in.

Anyway for the first time since I was a teen I'm looking forward to getting older and a big birthday!

I have purchased my own insurance for the last 15 years. I went with a HD plan. When the ACA came out I checked those plans. Oh my, my HD was $3,500 and the ACA were thee times that and the same price. I too am up to $1,000 per month and looking forward to medicare in Aug. I can't change the aging process so I may as well embrace it and look at what I'll be saving.
