Toe trouble

Can fell on my toe about 2 weeks ago . Wondering if nail isto be taken off and if you had if all taken off --also how about hurting and lasting without. Just want to be prepared

Brain getting old-watch out. Lid from garbage can fell on forehead last week-still a knot. What's next. I know not a big deal for some of you. Wishing you all the best.

Many years ago a can of soup fell on my big toe, damaged the toenail, and caused a blood blister to form under the nail. I didn’t go to the doctor over it, just let it heal itself, which it did, but it took a full year for that toenail to totally grow out and look normal again.

My husband had a thumbnail removed years ago, and yes, the entire nail was taken off. I know several people who have lost the entire nail on their big toes.

I doubt they'd remove a toenail unless there's an abscess festering underneith it. Normally the toe and nail should take care of itself.

Damaged one of mine and the nail was purple and my toe hurt the entire summer. It's possible I broke the toe. Took months, but eventually the purple nail grew out and the damage healed.

Hi Halfpint: There's really nothing that can be done with a toe unless, like they say, there is an infection. If it's still red and "hot", then you should see a Podiatrist. That could mean an infection.

I had something fall out of the freezer, on my big toe and I thought I broke it. I went to my doctor and someone there took me upstairs to a Podiatrist and they x-rayed it and thought it was gout. Gout????? LOL They put a boot on me and sent me home. Just another way to make money.

BTW, my regular doctor was on vacation that day, so another one took me to the Podiatrist. When my regular doc came back and saw my notes, he said "why would they put a boot on you if they thought you had Gout?? LOL

Again, just watch that toe and don't let it get hot and red....

Years ago, I had an ingrown toenail and they cut off just the part where it was ingrown. No pain there - they numbed the toe first. They said it was "cellular".......

Take care of yourself... I know you are going through a lot now. Good luck.....

@halfpint1 @I think your toe will heal up but it takes time.If you see swelling or it feels hot then you should see if it is infected..Did the skin break open after the can fell on it?

I dealt with a sore , left foot, big toe for months. Saw my GP right away and he thought it might be an infection. Antibiotics for 7 days, no change. Went back and he said it could be a Skin Infection. Went to my Dermatologist, no skin infection, but he thought a different Antibiotic would clear it up, it didn't.

Went to my Orthopedic Foot Specialist and he wasn't sure. Got out what he called his "pain tool" and dug between my skin and under my toenail(ouch). Removed some nail and said to come back in a week.

To shorten this up, I made 3 more total visits, limping, but still able to ice skate the same. Finally told him to surgically remove the danged nail, he did. Had so much gauze and tape around it I could't get a shoe on my left foot, but!! The next day, a Friday, I was able to cram it into my left ice skate, and still keep on skating.

He said I wouldn't injure it by skating, but it might hurt like "he!!", and it did, but I have skated with worse.

Long story, but I dealt with this thing for close to 5 months, and finally got it resolved. Doubt my story helped you, but who knows, it was a big toe issue! I hope you find some relief for your problem(s). And here I thought I was the WORLDS biggest clutz.

I had so many black toenails from running I lost count, yes, blood under the toenail. My solution, which immediately stopped most of the pain?

Got a sewing needle, a thick one. Heated it up for 2 different reasons. Sat down/pulled that foot across my horizontal leg/took the needle and pushed it into and through the toenail. Almost all the blood comes out, along with most of the pain. Still goes through all the multi color changes, but pain free.

Whenever my wife saw me get a needle? She left the room. Black toenails are not uncommon to distance runners, especially those like myself, that has 1 foot a full size smaller than the other. Gotta go with the bigger size, thus the smaller foot moves inside the shoe, and running downhill? Think you get the picture.

I hope that toe heals well but don't blame everything on getting old. Accidents happen to all of us at some time or another.

@hckynut Years ago I slammed my finger in the car door on a cold winter day. My language was ripe!

My husband heated up a paperclip (that's what was closest). I thought he was nuts! But the throbbing pain had me trusting him completely. I lay on the kitchen floor with my hand on the counter as he put that hot paperclip through my fingernail. The blood spurted all over the kitchen floor! What an instant relief as the pressure subsided.

It took about nine months for that nail to grow completely out. Didn't bother me at all. I just covered the hole with nail polish and no one knew!

My husband won "Man of the Year Award" for taking care of me so quickly and gently. I finished putting the groceries away right afterward! No, I didn't play the role of invalid.

My 85-pound Weimaraner stepped on my right foot and broke my middle toe. For years I was on my feet at work and never had foot problems. Then after retirement, my dog breaks my toe. The luck of the Irish, I guess. There was nothing to be done medically, it healed over time.

You husband sounds like my type of guy. While telling these things is not pleasant for some to read, relief from that throbbing pressure pain, and almost instantly, is amazing.

Even though my wife "trusts me", she started to watch my 1st try at doing this to 1 of my toes, before leaving the room? Not 100% sure she would let me do this to her. So glad you trusted that good man, your great husband.

Anyone that suffers these same fates of blood under a nail? Now you have the solution, what you do with it? That is up to you.

Thank you for sharing your story? Mine sounds kind of gorry and gruesome, yours kinda like a "love story".

Saw the doctor today-he didn't say anything so I guess no big deal. Had a pnuemonia shot. I guess every 10 years it is needed. didn't know I had one then.
