I have a callus on the side/bottom of my large toe and it gets sore and uncomfortable if I go barefoot or wear socks. Usually not a problem wearing shoes. Went to a podiatrist and he said it is caused by pressure from bone under the toe. He shaved off some of the dead skin and said it will feel better for a short while (it does). Surgery was an option but I like to avoid it if possible. ANy thoughts on this? Would acupuncture work on this type of condition?

My advice is to take this seriously, and do whatever you need to do to get rid of the callus since it is a result of pressure on that toe. I would be more focused on making sure this does not develop into a serious medical issue, than a pain control issue.

My husband is dealing with a serious pressure ulcer on his foot. He is diabetic, and pressure ulcers are very common in diabetics. However, you do not have to be diabetic to have a pressure ulcer develop on your feet.

Any injury to hands and feet is a medical concern because of blood flow issues to those extremities.

Acupuncture is not going to get rid of the callus on your great toe. As long as you have that callus, you will have some pain.

I would opt for surgery and get it over and done with once and for all if that is your doctor's suggestion. Anything else is just a temporary solution.

I will say to you what I say to my husband. " if you don't want surgery, it doesn't hurt bad enough, yet." I hope it doesn't get worse.

I get calluses on the sides of both of my pinky toes and if I let them go then they turn into really painful corns. My problem is from light rubbing on that part of my foot...socks or shoes will cause this for me because I have a medical condition called scleroderma which means I have hard skin. I have to go to a wound care doctor to have the thickened skin removed. I get them on my fingers, too. My doctor said I should have my pinky toes removed. But in the meantime, I am really careful about the kind of socks and shoes I wear. The bottoms of my feet have parts where the skin gets thick and I have bought cushioned insoles to help lessen the pressure on my soles. For me this has been an ongoing situation that doesn't seem to be getting any better...and I don't expect it will. All I can do is minimize the rubbing and try and lessen any pressure on my feet.

I never go barefoot and keep my feet moisturized....but still have calluses in weird places. I think a lot of it is from how you walk...and how your shoes fit.

Once a month I use that foot thing they sell on QVC that spins away the dead Skin. It really does work.

I bought this diamond foot file a few months ago. It is not a cheese grater. Those are solid bumps on the file and the other side of this flat file is another smoothing diamond file. It's is the best file I have ever used!! The thing is big, about 8" long and the head 3" wide. I use it on the bottoms of my feet. It's an awesome TOP-RATED file.

Earth Therapeutics Diamond File - $10

I’ve had calluses on the sides of my big toes all my adult life. I use a pedicure pumice stone to keep them down and foot cream to soften the skin. Even so, those calluses still come back. I think the way you walk and the shoes you wear are potential causes. They haven’t affected the bones in my feet or been painful, so I’ve never consulted a doctor about them.

Your shoes might be the problem. Are they too tight? Maybe you need to look for shoes with a wider toe box. You also need to keep on top of the calluses.

If the surgery the doctor is talking about involves anesthesia, that sounds very risky for calluses. If you haven't yet, see a podiatrist. They specalize in feet. You will get a recommendation for the best shoes to wear for your type of feet, and the best way to deal with the calluses. The podiatrist will also take care of the calluses for you.

There is a guy on Youtube, The Toe Bro. He is a licensed foot specialist (Chiropodist) in Canada. There are videos of him taking care all sorts of problems with the feet, including calluses. All are in-office procedures. I don't know if it will gross you out or encourage you. Just to let you know that there is hope.

Almost everyone has callouses somewhere on their feet. And, feet are high maintenance, especially as we age. Some of us have health issues that require closer monitoring of the feet than others. One thing I can say though....please, please take care of your feet. If you have arthritic joints, and can no longer reach your feet, go for regular pedicures if you can afford them. If not, check and see if your insurance will cover trips to the podiatrist. However...do NOT let a podiatrist talk you into a surgery that isn't necessary. Callouses can hurt, but keeping them under control usually tends to keep the pain at bay. And don't neglect your toenails.

Yep, your big toe is being rubbed by a shoe that is too pointy or too short. I'm always looking high and low for shoes with a more square toe box. Good luck and please share any good shoe finds.

I have the exact same problem with wool socks. I have to choose them wisely. Blended merino works best for me.

I bought it at Ulta dot com when they had it on sale.

Use it on DRY FEET.

@SilleeMee I bought one of these based on your rec & on the packaging, it says to use it on moist skin after a shower/bath. Not sure I'd want to use it on moist skin, though.

I used it this morning before my shower & it made my feet so rough, I ended up using my Emjoi Micro-Pedi to make my feet smooth enough. Not sure I'd want to be sawing at my feet after a shower, since I like to apply body butter to my feet when I get out of a shower & I'd have to rinse the "crumbs" off if I filed at my calluses after a shower. I think you'd want to use a really light touch if you used it on moist skin, too.

ETA: I have a Diamoncel #11 Foot Buffer that I bought like 14 or so years ago based on recs from this board & it does say to use it on dry skin. It works pretty well, though it was a bit pricey & since I bought the Emjoi, I seldom use the Diamoncel anymore.
