Hints for Nursing

Babies eat and eat and eat. Although nature has done a pretty good job of providing you and your baby with the right equipment, in the beginning it's almost guaranteed to be harder than you expected. From sore nipples to tough latch-ons, nursing can seem overwhelming.

@maria001 Yes, all true. Not sure I understand the purpose of your post, though. Are your comments supposed to be the hints or are you asking for hints on how to manage your way through it?

Nursing is soooo gross. I would never do it. There are plenty of great food options for babies without having to resort to such.

I nursed 3 of my 4 children, & actually I expected it to be harder than it was. The hospital that I delivered in had a lactation specialist who can be a great help, if needed. IMO, the benefits of breastfeeding are well worth it.

Yes! I feel the same way! I know the speil....its the best for the baby, antibodies, blah, blah, blah. I never wanted to nurse my kids. My friends thought it was magical but it just grossed me out. My kids are grown, healthy and strong. No difference than those children that were nursed.

The pressure to nurse on new moms is so unfair. This is a personal decision and no one should be forced into doing it. I didn't nurse and guess what? The sky didn't fall. The first time my son was sick was in the 4th grade and had strep. He missed 1 day of school from kindergarten thru 12th grade. Even now at 42 he is rarely sick. Does get some things from his kids being in daycare. Breastfeeding is not healthier. They just want to guilt you into thinking that. This is YOUR choice.

I know! My Dr. made me feel guilty when I decided not to. But it repulsed me. I adored my babies and they did fine.

I nursed all three of my children for a full year. The first one was born almost 45 years ago and I was a very young mother. No one showed me how or even suggested it. We could not afford formula.

Heck, if dogs cats and other animals do it without instructions, I don't understand the big deal. It was not overwhelming or difficult.

What's the purpose of this thread?

IMO if the mother is not up for it, it's best for mother and baby to bottle feed. I breast fed my son for 6 weeks, but stopped after that, I thought it was a pain and I could afford formula. That being said, I do think it's better for baby to breast feed, but if momma isn't happy, nobodies happy.

I don’t get it,either. Whenever I read something so out of touch on this board, all I can do is attribute it to the older average age of the women who post here

??? Hmm .... and I found your comment to be pretty out of touch .... there's a very large cross section of women (and men) of all ages on this board.

@septemberOh my gosh, what does being "old" have to do with how we view the topic of nursing a baby??!!! I'm 70 and nursed all 3 of my babies, at a time when it wasn't popular to nurse. It's the most naturall thing to do, obviously, or we wouldn't produce milk. If you choose not too, that's fine too.

But if someone thinks it's gross, they have a seriously deep problem somehow with breasts, or body image. That's NOT natural. That's out of touch no matter how old you are.
