@Trinity11you are right

snip from Yale medicine

How do you get vitamin D?

The short answer is from food, the sun or supplements.

There are two main kinds of vitamin D—vitamin D2 and vitamin D3—which you can get from (and occur naturally in) certain foods like salmon, tuna, mackerel and beef liver and egg yolks. But because we don’t consume large enough quantities of these foods, they can’t be our sole source of vitamin D. That’s why foods like milk, cereal and some orange juices are vitamin D2- and D3-fortified. (Since the 1930s, manufacturers have voluntarily enriched these foods with vitamin D to help reduce the incidence of nutritional rickets.)

When exposed to the sun, your skin can manufacture its own vitamin D. “We each have vitamin D receptor cells that, through a chain of reactions starting with conversion of cholesterol in the skin, produce vitamin D3 when they’re exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) from the sun,” says Yale Medicine dermatologist David J. Leffell, MD, chief of Dermatologic Surgery.

Another avenue to get vitamin D is by taking supplements. These come in both pill and liquid form. They are generally recommended for people with fat absorption issues, lactose intolerance, milk allergies, as well as for people with darker skin tones or with certain medical conditions that prevent them from going outdoors.

During the warmer months I take long walks in the sun and I avoid applying sunscreen on my lower arms and legs to expose those areas to the sun while I walk. I also take D supplements...5,000 units daily. I don't eat dairy so I need to take that much. Plus I am at risk for osteoporosis because of my malabsorption and I live north of the 37th parallel.

Due to diabetes and epilepsy, I've been on Vitamin D for decades. Have been an epileptic since shortly after birth. The anti-seizure meds deplete Vitamin D levels. I feel so much better in the warm, sunny months. Even though I'm always taking Vitamin D, it's not the same as the natural thing derived from the sun. The short days during the winter months are always difficult for my health issues (including Lupus).

I was tested last May, and my level was actually a little too high! Several years ago when I was tested it was at the lower level of normal, so I started taking a 2,000 mg tablet of Vit. D in the morning, and another in the evening. Since I live in NE Ohio, I get a lot of sun in the summer from jogging, so I have to cut back a little on the pills. There's no such thing as sun around here in the winter, but I can still keep my D up with just the supplements when it's gloomy (I still go outside to jog, though!). I'm going to be 70 next month, so it can be done at any age.

I think most people know this already, but you need to ingest adequate amounts of calcium for healthy bones and teeth. You need the vitamin D for the body to absorb the calcium. It's not necessary to take them at the same time.

I, too, am vitamin D deficient. At the lowest, I was 18.4. I have been put on 30,000 units of vitamin D weekly for 2-3 months at a time to get my levels up, then back to maintenance levels of 2000 units daily. It would drop every time. I am not able to absorb vitamin D like I should, along with other vitamin and minerals. Finally it was decided that I need to take 50,000 units weekly, and I will probably always need to. I am now up to 47.6, which is in the lower normal range. My doctors have said vitamin D deficiency is epidemic everywhere above San Diego. We see more of it due to the use of sunscreen, and there is not enough food in the world for me to eat to keep my levels up.

@Icegoddess wrote:

@pupwhipped, 60-100 is optimal although the normal range goes down to 30.

I'm hypothyroid which is another risk factor. I do eat dairy and work in the yard a lot in summer. I wear sunscreen, but don't reapply like you should. Even so, I'm always low without supplementation. I take prescription 50,000/wk + 4,000/day OTC (yes my doctor knows) just to keep me in the optimal range. Otherwise I get extreme fatigue, and I am osteopenic which is odd for someone as active as I am doing weight-bearing exercises at the gym and figure-skating along with the yard work.

Thanks, @Icegoddess! My last test showed 38.8. So it is within the somewhat "normal" range...but I do not think it is in the optimal range for best health.

When looking at lab test results for vitamin D levels in the blood it is important to note how it is reported because the ranges are not the same. Labs report numbers in nanomoles and also nanograms. Make sure you look at the ranges reported by the lab doing the test to see where your level falls.

https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Vitamin%20D-HealthProfessional/

software: fyi...........

Very few foods in nature contain vitamin D. The flesh of fatty fish (such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel) and fish liver oils are among the best sources. Small amounts of vitamin D are found in beef liver, cheese, and egg yolks.

If you are deficient, best to use vitamin D supplement.
