Has anyone heard noises that no one else does?

I am going to get a hearing test for I have been hearing noises that no one else hears. Like when the ac is turned off I hear motors or what ever making noise. It has driven me nuts and taking anxiety drug.

Hello @halfpint1

When your air conditioner is turned off, the fan keeps circulating the air in the house.

Wait a little while longer for your anxiety medication to fully get into your system. This may take 4-6 weeks to notice the full effects of the medication.

Hopefully your hearing test will be scheduled soon also. It’s a shame your doctor had to have you go to a different place for your test.

@halfpint1 You should first talk and see your primary care physician. The hearing test in secondary. Please don't get hooked on anxiety drugs -- they are additive.

Hello, @Katcat1! @halfpint1 has seen her doctor. She has posted that she has been hearing noises that seemed to start when her husband died, and these noises are very stressful for her. So for now, it’s very important that she take these meds. Sometimes they take a few weeks to help.

@halfpint1, I’ve been thinking about you, and I’ll put you on my prayer list. I know several posters on the widows’ thread care about you, too!

@Ruby Laine The whole story was not disclosed in this thread so thus my suggestion. However, if someone is hearing noises that is not normal and a hearing test will not help that. I only wish halfpint the best but it is better to see a specialist. I am not saying do not take her medication but be careful because it is additive. I know, I had a bad reaction from anxiey meds many years ago and I steer clear of them. An anxiety drug works immediately.

You are exactly right, @butterfly123. It depends on the dose and medication. I’m a former RN, and I’m glad that you are seeing your doctor about this, @halfpint1. I know this is a rough time for you.

Why not get a small tape recorder and carry it with you? Get a used one on ebay if you don't have one. I don't have an Alexa thingy so I don't know if that would work.

When you are hearing noises, turn it on. Keep it running until it stops.

Years ago I had one with VOX, '90's voice activated technology. It would turn itself on when it heard sounds. I had a creeper neighbor at the time I thought was knocking/ trying my door when I wasnt home.

The rest of this story is this poster has heard this noise for 2 1/2 years. She has paid several technicians (4-5) to come to her house, as well as made emergency calls to both police and fire departments about this noise. While the noise is very loud to her and makes her scared, NO ONE, paid or otherwise, has heard it. Her son does not hear it. This noise seems to happen at night, and when she can’t stand it anymore she walks the 6 blocks to her sons house in the dark, to sleep there. I think she is afraid to be home alone, and her son just doesn’t realize it. She hasn’t been on the anxiety med for a full week yet.

@halfpint1 I have said this before but I will say it again.

First, I'm happy you are having a hearing test.

But your fears, especially at night, need to be taken care of with counseling. I'm not a big proponent of medication when it is not coupled with therapy.

I promise you that you will begin to find relief if you seek professional counseling.

You can vent here too but one-on-one sessions with a grief counselor especially will alleviate your fears and help you on this path of being a widow.

You are struggling to survive in unknow waters. No experience with the loss of a DH.

No help from others who hear absolutely nothing in your house.

I cannot stress enough that unless you have a medical condition to be ruled out about hearing noises, then I strongly urge you to step away from this and seek professional help.

There is nothing wrong with it; please do this.

Posters have given the OP great advice, from meds to bereavement therapy.

This is post is different. A while ago as I was falling asleep, I commented that I heard birds singing at this time of night. Sometimes we will hear a train whistle if conditions are right or low flying planes / helicopters if there is an emergency somewhere. Nope, he didn’t hear a thing.

Fell asleep soon thereafter, next day when things were very quiet I again hear birdsong: similar to walking in a forest on a Spring day and hearing birds singing. Very comforting and peaceful.

I dont hear it at it all the time. My doctor asked which ear is effected: it is in both ears at the same time and is a calming, peaceful background sound.

I don't have much hope that the hearing test will provide a reason for the noise that only you can hear. However, it is worth a shot. Keep us updated.

I kept hearing buzzing for a couple of years. At first I didn,t hear it outside. Then I hear it outside and figured it was bees, because there were bee nests under my eves.

Then I started to hear it walking the dog. I asked my neighbor one day when we were outside, if he heard the buzz. He said no. I asked if he could come in my house and listen because I had called an exterminator for bees in the attic. He came in and heard nothing.

Then he said bees are hibernating now, not buzzing.

That,s when I knew I had Bells in the batfry.

I went to the drug store and bought ear wax remover. After three days, no more buzzing. The Dr. said, Tinnitus. I am not on meds.

Butterfly You are the only one with an explanation. Not one person acknowledged this as a reason even the techs. I am not hearing things.. As for a hearing test I know I can not hear low voices either male or female but I will see.

A fan will only circulate air throughout the house if the fan setting's turned on. Yes, outside, the AC fan will spin for a few minutes until the unit's completely off, but a fan won't keep circulating the cold air unless it's set to do so (that's why a house gets warm and the temperature goes up before the AC comes on again). Even then, the fan wouldn't make an audible noise. She's had a lot of technicians to her house already, and they all have said there isn't a noise. In another thread, she's mentioned hearing the noise now at her son's place. That's not an AC fan.

Halfpint, the techs won't tell you there's a noise if there isn't one. To me, it seems like you have honest people coming out to look at your house given how they haven't taken advantage of you to fix problems that do not exist.

A hearing test also won't pinpoint the noises you hear. You need to talk to a doctor about the possibility of auditory hallucinations. These can stem from PTSD, stress, age, and other underlying health problems and may be a huge part of why you're hearing noise and no one else is.

I feel like everyone who has responded to your posts for the last 2 1/2 years has given you credit for knowing the routine sounds in your house. I personally feel you know very well the sounds associated with water running, the sounds coming from your refrigerator and freezer, your heat and air conditioning, etc. I am well aware of the fact the recirculating fan on my heat pump runs for 14 seconds, which is something my husband doesn’t hear, and isn’t aware of, but I know it.

You desperately want someone to tell you the noise you hear is your air conditioning fan, so that this is real, and it legitimizes your fears. If you really and truly believed the issue was the fan, why would it scare you? Why does this noise get so much louder at night when you are there alone that you actually get so scared you leave your house in the middle of the night and walk 6-7 blocks to your sons house?

The more you share about this, the more I question this being Sundowners, which is anxiety related.
