@Trinity11 I try to eat as low carb as I reasonably can, which is about 20-50 grams per day. It’s easy to have carbs sneak in.....I eat a lot of red meat, eggs, and cheese and my cholesterol has gone down and my triglycerides are particularly low. Condiments (even low sugar ones) often have carbs. I eat nuts and peanuts, too, and they have a few carbs.

"They're more reinforcing than they should be."

It's been known for some time that the gut sends signals to the brain that govern whether you feel hungry or full.

However, newer research has indicated that fats and carbohydrates might send these signals through separate pathways to the brain, potentially creating a combined effect, Small said.

"We wondered if it's not the case that if you have foods that have fat and carbohydrates, they might be more rewarding than equally caloric foods that contain primarily fat or primarily carbohydrates," Small said.

This is particularly a problem for modern humanity, and potentially an explanation of the twin epidemics of obesity and diabetes, she said.

"In the modern food environment, the vast majority of foods are high in both fat and carbohydrate," Small said. "In nature, these sorts of foods don't exist. You don't really find foods that are high in both fat and carbohydrates."

For the study, test participants underwent brain scans while being shown photographs of familiar snacks.

The snacks were either high in carbs (lollipops or candy), high in fats (meatballs or cheeses), or high in both (cookies or cakes), Small said.

The participants were asked to "bid" for the foods they preferred using real money, and told that if they won the auction they would be allowed to eat the item they selected, Small said.

The participants were willing to pay more for those foods that combined fat and carbohydrates, the researchers reported.

Additionally, foods featuring a fat-carb combo lit up neural circuits in the brain's reward center more than the person's favorite food, foods that appeared either sweeter or more energy-dense, or foods that came in larger quantities, the researchers found.

"What is surprising is it's not just more calories equal more reward," Small said.

The researchers also found distinct differences in people's ability to estimate calories in foods that were either heavy in fats or carbohydrates, Small said.

"People were really good at estimating how many calories were in fat, but they were terrible at estimating how many calories were in different carbohydrate foods," Small said. "When you add them together, they were no longer able to provide an accurate estimate."

These findings jibe with suggestions that snacks like nacho-flavored chips are foods perfectly engineered to push your buttons, containing "the right combo of fat, carb and salt," said Dr. Mitchell Roslin, chief of obesity surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

"This study explains that the body has limited skills to sense when enough is enough and why you eat the whole bag," Roslin said. "The bottom line is that we need to be educated consumers. We must make proper choices, and cannot just allow our hunger and satiety to guide us."

Mascha Davis, a registered dietitian and nutritionist in Los Angeles, urges her clients to get around these urges by keeping healthy snacks close at hand that contain carbs and fats, such as nut butters or trail mixes or bars featuring nuts and dried fruit.

"You're getting both the fat and the carbs, and that's satisfying you so you're not falling prey to the temptation of fast food or processed food," Davis said. "We may still have certain caveman tendencies, but we no longer live in a caveman landscape where it was feast or famine and sometimes there weren't plenty of options around."

The new study was published June 14 in the journal Cell Metabolism.

SOS

Salt, Oil, Sugar are the Holy Trinity of Food addictions.

Our bodies like carbohydrates...that’s how we live.

No earthly reason to restrict.

But our lizard brains (!) also like calorically dense foods.

Just keep the fat down & eat 2x as many carbohydrates

in whole food, plant based form.

That’s the key....plants & low fat.

The body will naturally ‘right’ itself (read=lose/gain weight if needed)

and obesity & other modern day illnesses...gone.

Plus....as humans, we consume 3-5lb of food a day.

3 pounds of calorie dense foods can get you in trouble really quick.

5 pounds of calorie dilute foods can help you lose weight.

Choose wisely.

I was going to avoid a discussion of what constitutes healthy eating because views on that are held as fervently by some folks as religion and or politics. That said, now that others have voiced their opinions about what they consider to be healthy eating, I MUST share the truth as I know it (yes, backed by rigorous science). Eating low carb is absolutely the healthiest way for everyone to eat. It’s a huge misconception that fats are bad for you. I, for one, would never eat a plant based diet! And, yes, I’m very, very heathy. There. That needed to be said.

There was a study shared in The New York Times a few years ago about how a lot of fast food is designed to be highly addictive. My endocrinologist thinks sugar is the cause of heart disease and I avoid it as much as possible. I treat donuts and chips like they are cigarettes because for me they are addictive.

I still love a delicious meal but I eat small quantities of a variety of foods. That keeps me from getting frustrated and binging on anything. I would prefer to eat vegan but I found I did poorly on the plan and grew weak and cranky. And I mean cranky...

Everything in moderation it’s good advice but the problem with that advice is that It’s very difficult to follow

It’s like, here’s a bag of potato chips but only eat five chips because that is the healthy portion or When you buy a burger only eat 1/4 of it because that is the moderate portion.

That is good sound and sounding advice but it’s practically impossible to follow for people who have eating disorders

It’s better for them to avoid those bad food altogether or only eat them on Sunday let’s say, between 4pm and 5pm. and be good the rest of the week, But you know you have that hour coming up where you can eat whatever you want and get your yayas of your system

moderation is one of the hardest things to achieve but it sounds so simple

I’m sure my post is full of mistakes but I’m dictating

It’s easy to have carbs sneak in.....I eat a lot of red meat, eggs, and cheese and my cholesterol has gone down and my triglycerides are particularly low. His cholesterol is also excellent. I have that genetic high cholesterol (had the testing) so when I eat too low carb, my LDL goes high. I walk a fine line. No real eggs and beef rarely. Cheese? I love but cut back.

When I ate plant based for 3 months my triglycerides got dangerously high. Like yourself, I canno handle certain foods. They trigger cravings so I have to avoid them. There never has been a chip where I ate just 10. I have heard this same thing from a lot of my family and friends.
